A Prototype Comparison of Human Trafficking Warning Signs: U.S. Midwest Frontline Workers’ Perceptions
Guided by the cognitive prototype approach, this article examines the prototype structure of the frontline workers’ perceptions concerning warning sign indicators in human trafficking. Online survey responses across a range of workplace sectors were analyzed using multiple-group confirmatory factor analysis (MG-CFA) for three groups. These groups were based on respondents’ self-reported human trafficking experiences: no witness (no encounter of h…
Sexual Orientation Equality and Religious Exceptionalism in the Law of the United Kingdom: The Role of the Church of England
There is a growing literature that addresses the appropriateness and merits of including exceptions in law to accommodate faith-based objections to homosexuality. However, what has rarely been considered and, as a consequence, what is generally not understood, is how such religious exceptions come to exist in law. This article provides a detailed analysis of the contribution of the Church of England to ensuring the inclusion of religious exceptio…
Playing with Race in the Early Republic: Mr. Potter, the Ventriloquist
The first American-born stage magician and ventriloquist was an African American named Richard Potter. Potter's stage career (1811–1835) coincided with the transition from an entertainment culture grounded in a metropolitan Atlantic world to an American show business that was nationalist and racist. This essay traces Potter's strategies and experiences within that transformation
Race Horse Men: How Slavery and Freedom were made at the Race Track
For centuries, rich Americans have acted out their claims to authority and superiority at the racetrack. In the nineteenth century, those claims depended largely on the labor of African American gr
Knowledge for Theory and Practice
We examine three related ways in which the gap between theory and practice has been framed. One approach views it as a knowledge transfer problem, a second argues that theory and practice represent distinct kinds of knowledge, and a third incorporates a strategy of arbitrage--leading to the view that the gap is a knowledge production problem. We propose a method of engaged scholarship for addressing the knowledge production problem, arguing that …
The Politics of Attention: How Government Prioritizes Problems
The Politics of Attention: How Government Prioritizes Problems. By Bryan D. Jones and Frank R. Baumgartner. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2005. 304p. $70.00 cloth, $25.00 paper. This book is about policy change in the U.S. national government. Taking the Keys from Grandpa
Recent highly publicized traffic accidents involving older drivers have led to renewed interest in state policies and administrative practices that award and renew drivers’ licenses in the American states. Because the probability of traffic accidents is linked to the medical conditions that are more prevalent among the elderly, and because the number of older drivers is expected to rise over the next several decades, one might expect that this wi…
Improvisation and Constraint: New Works by Judith Butler
Political Disagreement: The Survival of Diverse Opinions within Communication Networks
Political disagreement is widespread within the communication network of ordinary citizens; furthermore, political diversity within these networks is entirely consistent with a theory of democratic politics built on the importance of individual interdependence. The persistence of political diversity and disagreement does not imply that political interdependence is absent among citizens or that political influence is lacking. The book's analysis m…
Circuits of Surveillance
This paper examines the increasing police use of DNA profiling and databasing as a developing instrumentality of modern state surveillance. It briefly notes previously published work on a variety of surveillance technologies and their role in the governance of social action and social order. It then argues that there are important differences amongst the ways in which several such technologies construct and use identificatory artefacts, their ori…
Agent-Based Modeling: What I Learned From the Artificial Stock Market
The Santa Fe Artificial Stock Market (ASM) is a well-known agent-based model. A new revision of the code (ASM-2.2) is now available. This article describes some of the changes that were made in the code base and also presents some important lessons for agent-based modelers that can be illustrated with the code. Because the code is available on the Internet, it is hoped that this discussion and the code base it represents will be helpful to people…

Political Environments, Political Dynamics, and the Survival of Disagreement
This paper addresses a series of questions related to the survival of disagreement among interdependent citizens during an election campaign. Do campaign-stimulated processes of collective deliberation result in the elimination of disagreement within networks of social communication? If not, what are the factors that sustain political heterogeneity and disagreement? And what are the consequences of political heterogeneity within these communicati…
Inheriting the Revolution: The First Generation of Americans
The Morning After Years ago, when history writing had a more social scientific flavor, we would have called a book based on several hundred life stories prosopography. The author would have reduced the life paths to a series of elements and counted how many of the subjects were farmers, rose or fell in social status, moved from country to city, served in the army, married a spouse from another town, and so on
Simulation Modeling in Political Science
Simulation research has made some notable contributions in political science. This article describes a variety of simulation projects and points out the strengths and weaknesses of simulation in contrast with other methods of research. The strength of simulation research is that it is naturally suited to modeling projects that include a large number of autonomous, interacting agents. Statistical and formal methods of analysis have made contributi…

Toward a Context-Rich Analysis of Electoral Systems: The Japanese Example
Theory: Political parties receive a greater or lesser percent of seats than their percent of the vote in an election for a variety of reasons. District magnitude, the type of the electoral system, and strategic errors are three inherent features of an electoral system that affect seat bonuses. Malapportionment and turnout differentials are features specific to a country that also affect seat bonuses. Hypotheses: If each of the above sources of se…

Unraveling in Democratically Governed Groups
This essay presents a framework for the analysis of voting processes in interest group organizations. It explores the tension between majority rule and membership maintenance in a group. The major theoretical propositions are that myopic majority rule government can cause instability and a loss of members from the group. The risk of this instability, which is called unraveling, leads to behavioral and institutional solutions that impose nonmedian…
Foresight and Myopia in Organizational Membership
This paper demonstrates the importance of foresight in organizational membership decisions. The analysis is directed toward union membership decisions, but the logic holds for other kinds of organizations which provide selective incentives on the basis of member seniority. Discussion proceeds along these lines. First, the importance of seniority and time is emphasized, and the literature is discussed in this light. Second, a formal model of the m…

Josiah Royce —Theist or Pantheist
The philosophy of Josiah Royce speaks often of the Absolute and of God, but has left his readers somewhat in doubt as to his exact theistic position. Those who have expressed their doubts attack the Royce an conception of the Absolute from two directions. Some find it not unified enough, others too unified, to be theistic. The former of these call attention to certain discussions in which Royce explains his world unity as a unity of meaning, or a…
