The virtue of religious faith and its relationship to posttraumatic stress disorder in victims of torture
Three aspects of religious faith: faith-as-faithfulness; faith-as-trust; and faith-as-experience were examined in the lives of torture survivors with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The Fetzer Scale items: Positive and Negative Religious Coping (PRC & NRC), Religious Practices (RP), and Daily Spiritual Experiences (DSE) were applied to a sample of 111 asylees. While none of the correlational hypotheses from the total sample showed a signifi…
Responses to the 2014 Police Shooting of Michael Brown
This is a consensual multi-dyadic exploration of the diverse perspectives of seven community subgroups’ perceptions of events before, during, and after the 2014 police-involved shooting death of Michael Brown, Jr. in Ferguson, Missouri. Recognizing an enacted environment in the complex history that preceded the uprising, findings were contextualized and framed through the cosmology episode trauma model. A multicultural and visibly diverse researc…
Environmental Justice Activism
Our in-depth study of 12, spiritual but not religious (SBNR), participants arrested to protect nature as sacred presents a case to consider the religious and spiritual meanings of contemporary environmental and ecology movements. Through a lived religious approach to participants' narratives of environmental justice (ENVJ) activism, this paper identified four themes- reconstructing self and nature, re- envisioning social and moral life, living wi…
Spirituality in Resilience Processes in International Contexts
This special issue was prompted by several converging social and scholarly trends: a perceived rise in the frequency and severity of disasters, a call for more studies of the role of spirituality in disasters, a commitment to research on non-U.S. populations, and a recognition of the need for more sophisticated understandings of resilience processes. First, there has been a sharp increase of community-level disasters in the past decade with three…
A Way Forward for Spirituality, Resilience, and International Social Science
This special issue on spirituality in resilience processes across international contexts helps clarify a three-pronged research agenda for the future study of trauma and disasters by psychologists of religion and spirituality. First, the special issue demonstrates the value of expanding from U.S.-based theories, data, models, and practices to incorporate a wider repertoire of international research (e.g., Western Africa, Romania, Haiti, China, an…
Resilience Processes during Cosmology Episodes
The Haiti earthquake of January 2010 serves as an anchor for a new field of research on the role of spirituality in international large-scale catastrophes. Using the case study of one Haitian grandmother affected by the earthquake as a microcosmic representation of the Haitian people, we build an interdisciplinary theory of spirituality in extreme contexts. First, we identify 2 management theory concepts that we found useful: “cosmology episodes”…
Addressing religious and spiritual diversity in graduate training and multicultural education for professional psychologists
Professional counselors completed a survey assessing their attitudes regarding inclusion of client spiritual and religious issues into multicultural training and practice. Most respondents agreed that spiritual and religious issues should be included in counselor training and that this content could be integrated successfully into existing instruction regarding multicultural counseling
Earthquake in Haiti
The devastating earthquake in Haiti on January 12, 2010 killed over 230,000 people and injured many more. One year later, 1.2 million people were still living in tents. Haiti is only one of many places around the globe that have been struck by community-wide disaster in recent years, including the United States' own devastating tornadoes in Joplin, Missouri and Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Although several studies have demonstrated strong links between s…

It also explored their beliefs about how helping professionals can seek inspiration in their work. Open-ended survey questions from 333 respondents from a diverse range of religious and professional backgrounds were qualitatively analyzed. The themes ex- tracted give insight …
Chapter 9. Theistic Psychotherapy and the God Image
Assessing and working with issues of God image in therapy are often an essential part of successful treatment. God image development is a complex process that may include influences from family, peers, culture, gender, age, religious theology and tradition. From a theistic perspective, individuals’ actual relationship with God can have the greatest impact on God image development. According to this perspec- tive, it is important that therapists h…
