    Open Access•Sharon Gail Bruce•ARTICLE•Mediaevistik•2024

It has been more than a decade since the publication of the most recent English language overview of Carolingian history (ca. 750‐900 C.E.). In 2011, Cambridge University Press published The Carolingian World , a sprawling survey that alternated meaty chapters on political narrative with those devoted to themes like rural life, the economy, and elite culture. In the book under review, Cullen J. Chandler offers a more concise introduction to the s…

  • Graham A. Loud, The Social World of the Abbey of Cava, c. 1020–1300 . Woodbridge: The Boydell Press, 2021, xviii, 417 pp

    Open Access•Sharon Gail Bruce•ARTICLE•Mediaevistik•2023

The book under review provides the first comprehensive introduction in English to the history of the abbey of Holy Trinity, Cava. Founded in the countryside northwest of Salerno around 1020, the community grew from modest beginnings to become one of the most influential religious houses in southern Italy, thanks in no small part to the patronage of the Norman aristocracy, who conquered the region in the 1070s. A century later, Cava boasted over 1…

  • Veterum vestigia patrum: The Greek Patriarchs in the Manuscript Culture of Early Medieval Europe

    Open Access•Sharon Gail Bruce•ARTICLE•The Downside Review•2021

This article draws attention to the availability of Latin translations of Greek patristic literature in western reading communities before the year 800 through a survey of the contents of hundreds of surviving manuscripts from the Merovingian and Carolingian periods. An examination of the presence of the translated works of eastern church fathers in the 8th-century florilegium known as The Book of Sparks ( Liber scintillarum) and monastic library…

  • Textual Triage and Pastoral Care in the Carolingian Age: The Example of the Rule of Benedict

    Open Access•Sharon Gail Bruce•ARTICLE•Traditio•2020

The sixth-century Rule of Benedict became a foundational text for the practice of Christian monasticism in medieval Europe, but its utility extended outside of the monastery as well. In the Carolingian period church prelates repurposed parts of this influential monastic handbook for the purpose of pastoral care. In the decades around 800 CE, excerpts from the rule appeared in several composite manuscripts made for the instruction of parish priest…

  • The Apple of His Eye: Converts from Islam in the Reign of Louis IX. By William Chester Jordan

Open Access•Sharon Gail Bruce, Scott G Bruce•ARTICLE•Journal of Church and State•2020

In this slender book, William Chester Jordan explores the overlooked sources for King Louis IX’s program of converting Muslims to Christianity in the context of his failed crusade of 1248–1252 and his efforts to resettle these new converts in northern France. Jordan is no stranger to thirteenth-century Europe. For forty years, in book after book, he has examined the administrative acumen of the later Capetians from numerous perspectives, includin…

  • The Lost Patriarchs Project: Recovering the Greek Fathers in the medieval Latin tradition

    Open Access•Sharon Gail Bruce•ARTICLE•Religion Compass•2019

This article calls attention to an important, yet neglected, subset of medieval Latin sources: the dozens upon dozens of works of late antique and early Byzantine Christian Greek authors translated into Latin between the second and the thirteenth centuries. It also introduces a new initiative to study these sources: The Lost Patriarchs Project. The goal of this article is threefold. First, it presents a sample of the deep, virtually untouched res…

Open Access•Sharon Gail Bruce, Scott G Bruce•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2014

This is a relatively little book with a big agenda. In late 2009, Steven Vanderputten and Brigitte Meijns convened a small conference at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium to explore the state of current scholarship in central medieval monasticism (c.900–1050) and to reflect in particular on the interaction of religious communities with the outside world ‘as a key paradigm with which investigations into the monastic phenomenon can be fr…

Open Access•Peter Hayes, Sharon Gail Bruce et al.•ARTICLE•North Korean Review•2012

IntroductionAlthough North Korea's KCNA news often threatens to launch nuclear strikes, in reality, the North Korean nuclear program has limited offensive capability.1 Just how limited is a matter of dispute between well-informed observers and analysts. South Korea's defense minister, Kim Kwan-j in, for example noted recently that it was possible that North Korea had miniaturized a nuclear warhead as there had been, in his opinion, enough time fo…

  • North Korean Nuclear Nationalism and the Threat of Nuclear War in Korea

    Open Access•Peter Hayes, Sharon Gail Bruce et al.•ARTICLE•Pacific Focus•2011•Cited by: 4•References: 3

This essay reviews the status of nuclear threat in Korea and analyzes the appropriate policy response to the emergence of the DPRK as a nuclear‐armed state. We suggest that as of 2009, the DPRK made the ROK the main target of its nuclear strategy rather than the USA, as was the case from 1991–2009. The sinking of the ROK corvette Cheonan in 2010 provides a mini‐case‐study of the collision of ROK and DPRK historical trajectories, and portends cont…

  • The Chronicle of Hugh of Flavigny: Reform and the Investiture Contest in the Late Eleventh Century

Sharon Gail Bruce•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2010

This book examines Hugh of Flavigny's Chronicon, a work of pro-papal propaganda written in the Empire in the decade or so following the death of Pope Gregory VII in 1085. Although presented as a universal history, Hugh's Chronicon was first and foremost a polemic against King Henry IV, attacking both the flaws in his character and the failings of his policies. The work relies heavily on the letters of Gregory VII for its orientation and content. …

  • From Martyr to Monument: The Abbey of Cluny as Cultural Patrimony

Sharon Gail Bruce•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2010•Cited by: 1

The abbey of Cluny looms large over the religious landscape of the central middle ages. During the tenure of Abbot Hugh the Great (1049–1109), the community tripled in size to more than 300 monks, and work had begun on the building complex known to historians of church architecture as Cluny III, the largest basilica in western Europe at the time. Moreover, before the advent of the new monastic orders of the twelfth century, most notably the Ciste…

Sharon Gail Bruce•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Academy…•2008

Much of what we know about late antique monasticism in the eastern Mediterranean comes from the texts produced by charismatic ascetics and their followers: sermons, letters, rules of conduct, and sacred biographies written in Coptic, Greek, and Syriac. Recently, scholars of the late ancient world have turned to these sources to reconstruct and contextualize the religious and social worlds of the “great old men” of the desert and the communities t…

The participants at the six-party talks should consider the full scope of activities needed to implement the South Korean scheme; that they should explore an alternative approach that would link the Russian and South Korean grids, thereby achieving the same outcome at lower cost and lesser political risk; and that the six parties should consider adopting a short-term, alternative package rather than resuming HFO deliveries to the DPRK because thi…

  • Silence and Sign Language in Medieval Monasticism: The Cluniac Tradition, c.900–1200

Open Access•Sharon Gail Bruce, Scott G Bruce•BOOK•Silence and Sign Language in…•2007

Silence and Sign Language in Medieval Monasticism explores the rationales for religious silence in early medieval abbeys and the use of nonverbal forms of communication among monks when rules of silence forbade them from speaking. After examining the spiritual benefits of personal silence as a form of protection against the perils of sinful discourse in early monastic thought, this work shows how the monks of the Abbey of Cluny (founded in 910 in…
