This article aims to describe a paleopathological case consistent with a paediatric hip joint trauma, discussing its aetiologies and lifelong implications, such as limb asymmetry and osteoarthritis. The case studied is a well-preserved skeleton of a female individual (Museu Nacional de História Natural e da Ciência, Universidade de Lisboa) who died in Lisbon in 1954, at the age of 54. The bone changes were macroscopic and radiologically studied, …

The impact of environmental stress on minor congenital defects
A sample of 117 adult individuals from the Lisbon Identified Skeletal Collection (aka Luís Lopes Collection) was used to test the association between six minor congenital defects (MCD) and stress markers. The goal was to assess if any of the tested MCD might be considered a useful indicator of stress in early life. The variables included in the study are manubrium mesosternal joint fusion, sternum hyperplasia, sternal aperture, sternal caudal cle…
Osteological evidence of short stature and parieto-squamosal arch craniosynostosis in a non-adult male from the 13th century Leiria, Portugal
Conditions that cause bone dysplasias and premature closure of sutures are rare. This study aims to discuss the underlying condition of a juvenile exhumed from the São Martinho church graveyard, Leiria, Portugal. The necropolis's stratigraphy dates this individual ca. 1211 AD, the date the church was founded. The skeleton is 84% complete, and the bones are well preserved. Pelvic morphology indicates a male individual. Age at death estimated from …
High status diet and health in Medieval Lisbon
This paper presents the first bioarchaeological study of Islamic diet and lifeways in medieval Portugal. Stable isotopes of δ13C and δ15N and osteological and paleopathological analyses are combined to explore the diet and health status of 27 humans buried within São Jorge Castle, Lisbon (eleventh to twelfth century), interpreted as a high status population. Human isotopic data are considered alongside an animal baseline comprised of 30 specimens…

Age at death and linear enamel hypoplasias
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to test the association between linear enamel hypolasias and adult socioeconomic circumstances with age at death in a modern skeletal sample of known age. Specifically, this study wishes to test whether there is a relationship between early life stressors, environmental quality in adult life and premature mortality. METHODS: The presence/absence of LEH and the number of LEH episodes were recorded in 113 adult …
Riesgo sanitario de la población vulnerable expuesta al arsénico en la provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina
The findings from the composite index of health summarized the health risk from exposure to arsenic for lower socioeconomic levels of the population for a broad area of the province of Buenos Aires
Changes in stature of Portuguese women born between 1966 and 1982, according to educational level
Studies which document secular change in stature are almost exclusively based on males, while similar data on females is less common. In addition, secular trends in socioeconomic differences of height are seldomly reported. This study aims to document changes in mean stature in a sample of Portuguese women born between 1966 and 1982 (n = 30,629). For this study self-reported stature data was obtained from a large sample of women who delivered the…
Is the circumference at the nutrient foramen of the tibia of value to sex determination on human osteological collections? Testing a new method
This paper tests the validity of the circumference at the nutrient foramen of the tibia for sex determination on two human osteological collections: the Lisbon Collection of Identified Skeletons (n = 160) and the São Martinho medieval archaeological collection from Leiria, Portugal (n = 57). The methodological approach chosen to conduct the test was the sectioning point method. The overall accuracy (males and females combined) in the Lisbon Colle…
Conflito social e mecanismos para a sua resolução em primatas não-humanos
This article aims to explore the role of social conflict on the social organization of non-human primates. The different causes and forms that the conflict may assume will also be described.A study about conflict would not be completed without looking at the mechanisms adopted by the primate order to minimize the possible negative impact of conflict itself. Thus, afiliative behavior and reconciliation will also be portrayed. The theoretical backgrou…
The Not‐so‐Dark Ages
This study attempts to address the issue of relative living standards in Portuguese medieval and early 20th century periods. Since the growth of children provides a good measure of environmental quality for the overall population, the skeletal growth profiles of medieval Leiria and early 20th century Lisbon were compared. Results show that growth in femur length of medieval children did not differ significantly from that of early 20th century chi…
Modelos geo-espaciales para la vigilancia local de la salud
Spatial analysis was shown to be a useful tool for site analysis and risk management since it indicated a definitive association between elevated lead levels and the proximity to the source, and/or residing on a dirt road, connections which had not been revealed with traditional epidemiological analyses. The results provided the scientific evidence needed to begin implementing interventions regarding the sources of exposure and education aimed at…
