  • Warming Arctic and its Cascading Impacts on Water, Energy, and Food (WEF) Systems: A Case Study of Iqaluit, Nunavut

Open Access•H M Tuihedur Rahman, Shawn Ingram et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2025

This paper draws on a case study of Iqaluit, Nunavut, to exemplify the conceptual utility of the water – energy – food (WEF) nexus as a starting point in better understanding the cascading nature of climate change impacts. The case study demonstrates that damage to Iqaluit’s main fuel storage tank caused by instability in the permafrost layer induced a series of cascading impacts that affected Iqaluit’s water, food, sanitation, and health care se…

  • The cascading disaster risk of water, energy and food systems

    H M Tuihedur Rahman, Shawn Ingram et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Hazards•2024•References: 6

This study presents a modified Institutional Analysis and Development framework for the purposes of analysing and developing policies to address cascading disasters in interconnected water, energy, and food (WEF) sectors. The aim of the framework is to inform how policymakers can synchronize and coordinate cross-sectoral and trans-governmental policies to manage cascading WEF disasters. To justify its applicability, we have tested the framework i…

  • What Gets Measured Gets Done: Challenges in Monitoring Water, Energy, and Food Security in Northern Canada

Open Access•Ana-Maria Bogdan, Timothy Shah et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2023

This paper describes the challenges that were encountered during the collection of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicators for water (SDG 6), energy (SDG 7), and food (SDG 2) security in northern Canada. Our findings indicate only 49% of indicator data were publicly available, while 21% had to be calculated using alternative sources or methods, 18% had to be replaced with proxy indicators for which data were available, and 12% of indicators…

  • Understanding the Nature of Country Food Sales among First Nations in Alberta, Canada

    D C Natcher, David Natcher et al.•ARTICLE•Human Organization•2022

This research was motivated by increased tensions that had arisen within First Nations communities in the Peace River region of Alberta over the selling of country foods and the belief among some that it has incentivized excessive hunting and the abandonment of food-sharing traditions. Our results indicate that rather than having deleterious ecological and social effects, country food sales are not being driven by profitability, nor are the norms…

  • A Nexus Approach to Water, Energy, and Food Security in Northern Canada

    Open Access•D C Natcher, Shawn Ingram•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2021

Residents of northern Canada experience high rates of water, energy, and food (WEF) insecurity relative to the national average. Historically, WEF systems have been treated independently with little policy or institutional coordination occurring between sectors. This paper presents the results of a WEF nexus analysis for northern Canada. We assess the positive and negative interactions between the WEF sectors that could facilitate or impede the a…

  • Scenario planning tools for mitigating industrial impacts on First Nations subsistence economies in British Columbia, Canada

    Open Access•D C Natcher, Naomi Owens‐Beek et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainability Science•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 2

The Montney Play Trend (MPT) is a 1090 km 2 region in northeast British Columbia that produces approximately one-third of western Canada’s natural gas output. In response to a proposed expansion of the MPT in 2016, the Government of British Columbia launched a Regional Strategic Environmental Assessment (RSEA) to identify the necessary conditions to achieve sustainable environmental outcomes. In this paper, we describe the methods and scenario pl…

  • Understanding First Nations exposure and sensitivity to economic and ecological change in Canada

    D C Natcher, David Natcher et al.•ARTICLE•Hunter Gatherer Research•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 34

First Nations in Canada engage in a form of mixed economic production that includes the complementary integration of subsistence (eg hunting, fishing, gathering, sharing) and wage-earning sectors. The flexibility of mixed economies has long enabled First Nations to optimise the use and allocation of household assets (eg time, labour, income) during times of economic and ecological change. In this study, we relied on the disaggregation of househol…
