Examining Highly Skilled Vietnamese Migrants’ Return Decision-Making through Their Aspirations for the “Good Life” in Vietnam
Research indicates that an increasing number of Vietnamese international students return to Vietnam after graduation, yet migrants’ return decision-making remains understudied. This article draws on eighty-six ethnographic interviews with highly skilled migrants in Vancouver and Paris who have considered or decided against returning to Vietnam, as well as with those who have already returned. Centering on migrants’ aspirations for the “good life”…
Mapping (In)Formal Francophone Spaces: Exploring Community Cohesion Through a Mobilities Lens
Immigration is being used as a policy lever to sustain the demography of Canadian Francophone minority communities (FMCs). As FMCs become increasingly diverse, concerns have been raised regarding their capacity to develop and sustain a sense of community cohesion. This study draws on the mobilities paradigm to examine how community members within three different FMCs engaged within and beyond formal and informal Francophone spaces within the citi…
Studying occupations across borders: Methodological reflections on the value of cross-national comparative research
International students' cultural engagement through constructing distance or proximity
International students’ contact and engagement with various cultures has received increased scholarly attention. This scholarship tends to either celebrate students’ cosmopolitanism or highlight their difficulties ‘adapting’ in their receiving countries. In this paper, we examine students’ own perceptions of and engagement with their sending and receiving countries’ cultures through the dialectic of distance and proximity, gleaned from mobilities…
Constructing categories of 'desirable migrants' through bureaucracy in French and Canadian mobility regimes
This paper comparatively examines ‘highly skilled’ Vietnamese migrants’ encounters with the mobility regimes in France and Canada, through their experiences with immigration administrative procedures in these countries. We seek to highlight how categories of ‘desirable migrants’ are constructed through these bureaucratic encounters, by the policies and bureaucrats but also by migrants themselves. We draw from ethnographic interviews with 64 Vietn…
The Instrumentalization of French-Speaking Immigration in Canada Within a Colonial and Economistic Approach: A Critical Discourse Analysis
Since the early 2000s, immigration has been a key issue for Francophone minority communities. Several studies indicate that a gap exists between discourses open to immigration and practices leading to exclusion. However, this article questions the so-called 'openness' of discourses on Francophone immigration. As part of a larger ethnographic study using multiple methods, we analyzed 87 documents produced by selected governmental and non-governmen…
A dynamic and critical approach to belonging as a dimension of occupation
The 'in-between' role of linguistic minority sites in immigrants' integration: The Francophone community as third space in Metro Vancouver
Learning the dominant language of the receiving society is arguably key to ensuring immigrant integration. While this is important for immigrants who are not fluent in the receiving countries' official language(s), in this article, we examine the significance of using an official, but minority language (French) in Canada's Anglophone provinces. We focus on the Francophone minority community (FMC) in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, as a 'third …
Learning about occupation together: An interdisciplinary graduate course
This paper outlines the approach to learning and knowing occupation adopted in a graduate level seminar focussed on the relationship between human occupation and society. Drawing on elements of transformational learning theory and critical pedagogy for the course design, instructors and students in the seminar engaged in a collective process of learning about occupation. Rather than focusing on the topical content of the course, this article outl…
Embracing transnational approaches for a more thorough and critical understanding of occupation in research on migration
In occupational science, migration has mainly been considered as an ‘uprooting’ experience and occupational scientists have examined the centrality of occupation in migrants’ integration in their receiving countries. Concerned about occupational injustices, occupational scientists have aimed at uncovering barriers that migrants face in their occupations and how these barriers can be overcome in their receiving countries. Migrants’ connections to …
Using theory to inform understandings of occupation in a migration context
Research on global migration has grown substantially in occupational science over the past decade. While literature reviews have focused on the results and recurrent themes emerging in occupation-focused studies, the present article discusses the use of theory in occupational science articles exploring international migration. Theoretically grounding occupational science research on migration can allow the discipline to ensure the depth of the kn…
Conceptualizing the role of occupation in the production of space
The interaction of occupation and space has long been studied in occupational science. Increasingly, occupational scientists take a transactional approach to examine the spatial nature of occupation. Drawing from Lefebvre’s (1991 Lefebvre, H. (1991). The production of space (Nicholson-Smith, Trans.). Blackwell. [Google Scholar]) theory of ‘the production of space’, this paper emphasizes that occupations are inherently spatial, but also that space…
