Neither Absolutism Nor Negotiation
This paper revisits the political economy during Spanish rule in America by reappraising the allegedly positive impact that intra-imperial transfers ( situados ) had on the Caribbean economy. It raises concerns concerning categories such as bargaining and absolutism and their accuracy in accounting for the nature of Spanish imperial rule. Three main findings are reported. Firstly, it seems inaccurate to hold that all remittances were injected int…
Bartolomé Yun Casalilla (2021), Os impérios ibéricos e a globalização da Europa (séculos XV a XVII)
Linking the Atlantic and Indian Oceans
This article aims to analyse some of the multilateral flows of capital that contributed to weaving a Global South during the second half of the eighteenth century. It specifically revisits the functioning and financing of the Portuguese slave trade from a global perspective, and offers insights for assessing older frameworks that explain it, in either triangular or bilateral terms. The article argues that the Portuguese slave traffic should be li…
Rio De Janeiro and the Silver Mining Economy of Potosi
This paper's main goal is to advance some considerations on the interrelations between port cities and capital. More specifically, it sheds light on how these interdependencies took place in the eighteenth-century Portuguese and Spanish Atlantic world. This paper thus seeks to draw an urban political economy in transimperial, global, and contractual perspectives. For so doing, particular attention will be put to Rio de Janeiro's projection far be…
Bianca Premo, The Enlightenment on trial
State Contractors and Global Brokers
The Portuguese Empire was the stage for one of the largest movements of enslaved people during early modern times. Almost two millions enslaved humans were violently carried from Africa in Portuguese vessels in the eighteenth century alone. Yet, in contrast to British or French slave traders based in Europe, for which a vast literature is available, little is known about the Lisbon traders. This paper aims at filling this gap by paying attention …
Microglobal history
The present article discusses the configuration of the recent tendency known as microglobal history. It analyzes the way the microhistorical scale has become a methodological option to solve some problems of global history. Unlike the tendencies associated with post-structural studies, which use and abuse cultural aspects like race, gender, ethnic group, or figure of subordinates, the introduction of the subject in a translocal scale is presented…
