Back pain is one of the major contributors to disability and loss of productivity in modern populations. However, osteological correlates of back pain are often absent or, as yet, unidentified. As bioarchaeologists depend on osteological evidence to interpret quality of life in the past, back pain, with its profound effects on modern populations, is largely overlooked in archaeological samples. This study addresses this shortcoming in bioarchaeol…

  • Functional capabilities of modern and fossil hominid hands

    Open Access•M W Tocheri, Mary W Marzke et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2003•Cited by: 26•References: 18

Three‐dimensional (3D) trapezium models from Homo sapiens , Gorilla gorilla , Pan troglodytes , Australopithecus afarensis (A.L.333‐80), and Homo habilis (O.H.7‐NNQ) were acquired through laser digitizing. Least‐square planes were generated for each articular surface, and the angles between the planes were compared. Each extant species displays an overall pattern that distinguishes it from the others. The observed angles in G. gorilla and P. trog…

  • Hla

    Open Access•R C Williams•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1982

This review offers an elementary introduction to the HLA system. The assays for each locus are presented to describe how HLA phenotypes are derived. Then the genetics of the codominant alleles at each locus are discussed with special attention to their linkage in haplotypes. A brief description of the molecular structure of HLA antigens and a detailed look at the most commonly used formulas in HLA population genetics follow. The major application…
