Iranian Diaspora in Maritime Asia: A Study of Sixteenth Century Portuguese Sources
In the preceding article, 2 the data provided by the Portuguese sixteenth century sources on the Iranian presence in the Deccan sultanates has been analyzed. In a similar vein, the present article will look at other regions of India and on the countries around the Indian Ocean. The case of the shores of Persian Gulf will be left aside, as the Iranian presence there cannot be classified as diaspora. The case of the Delhi Sultanate, the Mogul Empir…
Iranian Diaspora and the Deccan Sultanates in India: A Study of Sixteenth Century Portuguese Sources
Portuguese sixteenth-century sources provide much information on the countries neighbouring the Portuguese positions in India, chiefly Goa. There are many interesting elements especially on the Sultanate of Bijapur, a little less on that of Ahmadnagar, and only disperse notes on the other sultanates of Deccan, which had scarce relations with the Portuguese. They bear witness to the presence of many Iranians, in the armed forces of the sultanates …
As Madagascar was known in the West at least since the 12th century, the Portuguese were presumably aware of its existence. At any rate the first Portuguese ship to sight it was apparently one of the fleet of Pedro Álvares Cabral – probably on 10th August 1500, whence the name of Isle of Saint Lawrence as the island is referred to in Portuguese sources. Madagascar was met with a second time by Afonso de Albuquerque, who in February 1504 navigated…
D. Manuel, a Índia e o Brasil
Jean Aubin, E. P. H. E., Paris & Luis Filipe Thomaz, Université Nouvelle, Lisbonne Un opuscule latin sur la prise de Malacca par les Portugais, imprimé en Italie en 1514 The text presented and translated here was published, probably in Rome, in 1514; it is owed to Francis Chalderia or Caldiera, a Friar who stayed in Portugal for two years (ca. 1512-1514). It is mainly based upon the Epistola Potentissimi ac Inuictissimi Emanuelis Regis Portugalia…
Luis Filipe Thomaz This article first sums up Portuguese terminology in naming ancient and modern Persians and Parsees, as well as the knowledge of the Portuguese, at the end of the fifteenth century, about the populations of Asia and about Islam. Then it reviews the presence of Persians on the shores of the Indian Ocean during the sixteenth century according to contemporary Portuguese sources. These sources are numerous and the geographical area…

Evolution of Empire: The Portuguese in the Indian Ocean During the Sixteenth Century
INTRODUCTION A better understanding than obtains at present of the nature of the Portuguese imperial enterprise in the sixteenth-century Indian Ocean depends on the resolution of a paradox: If it is poorly understood, this is because the principal “facts” of the matter are apparently so well known. Every schoolboy knows – or is supposed to know – of Vasco da Gama's voyage of 1497–9, and of Afonso de Albuquerque's acts of empire-building. Thereaft…
