Small villages have been central to progressive models of hunter-gatherer-fisher complexity on the Northwest Coast as a stage in the narrative of increasingly nonegalitarian social relations. We examine two archival indictors of fear: handgun purchases and hitchhiking. We use these indictors to study the distribution of fear in time, place, and the social order.
