Widespread impacts to precipitation of the East Palestine Ohio train accident
On 3 February 2023, a Norfolk Southern train derailment occurred in East Palestine, Ohio. The accident and subsequent fire resulted in the emissions of large amounts of hazardous compounds to the ambient atmosphere over many days. We used precipitation chemistry measurements routinely collected by the National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP) to estimate the spatial extent and chemical compounds deposited as a result of the accident. Our mea…
Investigating high methane emissions from urban areas detected by TROPOMI and their association with untreated wastewater
Even though methane concentrations have contributed an estimated 23% of climate forcing, part of the recent increases in the global methane background concentrations remain unexplained. Satellite remote sensing has been used extensively to constrain emission inventories, for example with the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument which has been measuring methane since November 2017. We have identified enhancements of methane over 61 urban areas aroun…
An improved understanding of NOx emissions in South Asian megacities using TROPOMI NO 2 retrievals
Identifying air pollutant emissions has played a key role in improving air quality and hence the health of billions of people around the world. Central to this effort are the development of emission inventories and the mapping of air pollution using satellite remote sensing. The TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) has been providing high resolution vertical column densities of nitrogen dioxide since late October 2018. Using the flux dive…
Source Apportionment of Fine Organic Particulate Matter (PM2.5) in Central Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
The development of infrastructure, a rapidly increasing population, and urbanization has resulted in increasing air pollution levels in the African city of Addis Ababa. Prior investigations into air pollution have not yet sufficiently addressed the sources of atmospheric particulate matter. This study aims to identify the major sources of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) and its seasonal contribution in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Twenty-four-hour av…
Investigating Cumulative Exposures among 3- to 4-Year-Old Children Using Wearable Ultrafine Particle Sensors and Language Environment Devices
Interdisciplinary approaches are needed to measure the additive or multiplicative impacts of chemical and non-chemical stressors on child development outcomes. The lack of interdisciplinary approaches to environmental health and child development has led to a gap in the development of effective intervention strategies. It is hypothesized that a broader systems approach can support more effective interventions over time. To achieve these goals, de…
Source Apportionment of Coarse Particulate Matter (PM10) in Yangon, Myanmar
The Republic of the Union of Myanmar is one of many developing countries facing concerns about particulate matter (PM). Previously, a preliminary study of PM 2.5 in 2018 suggested that the main source of PM in Yangon, the former capital, was vehicle emissions. However, this suggestion was not supported by any chemical composition data. In this study, to fill that gap, we quantitatively determined source contributions to coarse particulate matter …
Chemical Characterization and Seasonality of Ambient Particles (PM2.5) in the City Centre of Addis Ababa
Ambient air pollution is a growing public health concern in major African cities, including Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), where little information is available on fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 , with aerodynamic diameter 2.5 , including bulk composition and seasonal patterns, in Addis Ababa. We collected 24-h PM 2.5 samples in the central city every 6 days from November 2015 to November 2016. The mean (±SD) daily PM 2.5 concentration was 53.8 (±25.0)…
Changes in speciated PM2.5 concentrations in Fresno, California, due to NOx reductions and variations in diurnal emission profiles by day of week
The San Joaquin Valley in California suffers from poor air quality due to a combination of local emissions and weak ventilation. Over the course of decades, there has been a concerted effort to control emissions from vehicles as well as from residential wood burning. A multiple linear regression model was used to evaluate the trends in air pollution over multiple time scales: by year, by season, by day of the week and by time of day. The model wa…
Adoption and use of a semi-gasifier cooking and water heating stove and fuel intervention in the Tibetan Plateau, China
Cookstoves illustrate the need for a comprehensive carbon market Luke Sanford and Jennifer Burney Community effectiveness of stove and health education interventions for reducing exposureto indoor
A user-centered, iterative engineering approach for advanced biomass cookstove design and development
Unclean combustion of solid fuel for cooking and other household energy needs leads to severe household air pollution (HAP) and adverse health impacts in adults and children. Replacing traditional solid fuel stoves with high efficiency, low-polluting semi-gasifier stoves can potentially contribute to addressing this global problem. The success of semi-gasifier cookstove implementation initiatives depends not only on the technical performance and …
Human behavior research and the design of sustainable transport systems
Transport currently represents approximately 19% of the global energy demand and accounts for about 23% of the global carbon dioxide emissions (IEA 2009). As the demand for mobility is expected to continue to increase in the coming decades, the stabilization of atmospheric carbon dioxide levels will require the evolution of transport, along with power generation, building design and manufacturing. The continued development of these sectors will n…
