Escalating costs of innovative medicines: Perspective and proposals
Public healthcare systems are challenged by the soaring costs of medications that require increasing resources, often at the expense of other investments. The increasing pharmaceutical budget poses a threat to the allocation of funds for essential preventive and primary healthcare services while also raising concerns about equitable access, particularly in models where patients bear part of the costs out of their own pockets. Proposals on how to …
Excess mortality among older adults institutionalized in long-term care facilities during the Covid-19 pandemic: A population-based analysis in Catalonia
Objectives: To assess excess mortality among older adults institutionalized in nursing homes within the successive waves of the COVID-19 pandemic in Catalonia (north-east Spain). Design: Observational, retrospective analysis of population-based central healthcare registries. Setting and participants: Individuals aged >65 years admitted in any nursing home in Catalonia between January 1, 2015, and April 1, 2022. Methods: Deaths reported during the…
Reporting reimbursement price decisions for onco-hematology drugs in Spain
Introduction: Even using well-established technology assessment processes, the basis of the decisions on drug price and reimbursement are sometimes perceived as poorly informed and sometimes may be seen as disconnected from value. The literature remains inconclusive about how Health Technology Assessment Bodies (HTAb) should report the determinants of their decisions. This study evaluates the relationship between oncology and hematology drug list…
Management, Survival, and Costs of Pancreatic Cancer: Population-Based Observational Study in Catalonia
Half of the patients diagnosed with pancreatic cancer did not receive specific treatment. Surgery with curative intent was associated with longer survival, but only 18% of (mostly younger) patients received this treatment. Chemotherapy was also used less frequently in patients of advanced age, though survival in treated patients was comparable across all age groups, so careful oncogeriatric assessment is advisable to ensure the most appropriate i…
Dealing With Immunoglobulin Shortages: A Rationalization Plan From Evidence-Based and Data Collection

The aim of the study was to analyze the evolution of IgG consumption and cost over a decade, describe the measures implemented for clinical management in the context of regional public health system, and evaluate the initial impact of these measures. Methods We performed a retrospective longitudinal study including p…
Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on the Incidence of Suicidal Behaviors: A Retrospective Analysis of Integrated Electronic Health Records in a Population of 7.5 Million
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused remarkable psychological overwhelming and an increase in stressors that may trigger suicidal behaviors. However, its impact on the rate of suicidal behaviors has been poorly reported. We conducted a population-based retrospective analysis of all suicidal behaviors attended in healthcare centers of Catalonia (northeast Spain; 7.5 million inhabitants) between January 2017 and June 2022 (secondary use of data routine…
The Current Situation Regarding Long-Acting Insulin Analogues Including Biosimilars Among African, Asian, European, and South American Countries; Findings and Implications for the Future
Background: Diabetes mellitus rates continue to rise, which coupled with increasing costs of associated complications has appreciably increased global expenditure in recent years. The risk of complications are enhanced by poor glycaemic control including hypoglycaemia. Long-acting insulin analogues were developed to reduce hypoglycaemia and improve adherence. Their considerably higher costs though have impacted their funding and use. Biosimilars …
