Radicalising public services: A comparative analysis of two municipalist experiments in the Basque Country and Catalonia
What would a socially transformative public service provision look like? This article addresses this question in two ways: by advancing a theoretical proposal of ‘radical’ services as a set of prefigurative practices that, within and beyond the local state, redefine the public domain through collective and participatory forms of management and control; and by analysing two experiences in the Basque Country (Hernani) and Catalonia (Cardedeu) that …
The determinants of net wealth accumulation among young European households: Evidence from multilevel modeling (2010–2021)
This study examines the determinants of net wealth accumulation among young European households over the past decade (i.e. households headed by individuals aged 18–35 years). Using data from the Household Finance and Consumption Survey (HFCS) for twelve countries in 2010 and 2021, we apply a multilevel model to disentangle the individual and contextual components of net wealth. Our findings reveal a growing disconnection between income and wealth…
Beyond the New Municipalism: Towards Post‐Capitalist Territorial Sovereignty in the Case of Hernani Burujabe
The so‐called new municipalism has spread in different geographical settings as an attempt to democratise the economy and politics in the local sphere, in response to contemporary capitalist contradictions. However, it has encountered political, economic, and scale limitations that have prevented it from consolidating alternatives for territorial transformation. This paper presents the concept of territorial sovereignty as an analytical tool that…
Megaprojects as sites for resistance: The electoral effects of Mapuche attacks on highways
Megaprojects are electoral magnets due to their transformative power, but they also raise strong opposition. Using a Regression Discontinuity Design, this paper assesses the impact on presidential elections of Mapuche attacks and protests at two strategic road infrastructures. Mapuche uses a repertoire of non-conventional actions in their struggle with the Chilean state seeking self-determination. Estimations reveal that attacks reduce the likeli…
The Right and the Politics of Labor Informality Enforcement
The enforcement of labor informality is subject to electoral motivations, and political parties on the left and right have different incentives to do so. While leftist governments are more lenient not to harm their informal electorate, right-wing incumbents face an electoral dilemma: the part of its constituency that benefits from informal work is in favor of a permissive attitude, but another section demands a tough hand to deal with the unfair …
The electoral bias: The political economy of subnational transfers in Latin America
This article examines whether transfers to local governments in Brazil, Mexico, Colombia and Chile have been allocated to obtain electoral advantage. A large panel data set and fixed-effects estimations uncover two types of manipulations: grant fluctuations along the municipal election cycle and biases towards aligned municipalities. Notwithstanding, there are significant cross-country differences. In Brazil, Colombia and Chile, mayors aligned wi…

Industrial spaces for grassroots creative production: Spatial, social and planning facets
Former industrial premises provide material and symbolic resources for grassroots creative production, but planning is complex as these sites are transitory and excessive intervention may stifle creativity. This paper analyses the transformations of La Ribera (Bilbao), a mixed-use peninsula waiting to be redeveloped, where, in the meantime, creative-based grassroots projects have settled. Drawing upon relevant planning documents, documentary mate…
Culture-led neighbourhood transformations beyond the revitalisation/gentrification dichotomy
In the past 30 years, culture has been used as a means for revitalising neighbourhoods and branding the urban economy. Often, culture-led urban policies have had undesirable consequences in terms of rising rents, displacement of former residents and changes in the economic and retail landscape, i.e. gentrification. However, this process is not univocal, and displacement may not occur while disrupting community life. In this paper we explore the c…
Distributive politics and spatial equity: The allocation of public investment in Chile
Distributive politics and spatial equity: the allocation of public investment in Chile. Regional Studies. This paper analyzes the influence of electoral concerns on investment distribution from the central government to Chilean municipalities. Drawing upon panel data, it shows that investment is mediated by pork-barrel and political budget cycles, as well as favouring the relatively better-off areas. Estimations also reveal that resources are cha…
