Encouraging disposal of unused opioid analgesics in Appalachia
The Appalachian region has been disproportionately impacted by the opioid epidemic. This study, informed by the Health Belief Model (HBM), explored Appalachian community members' perspectives on prescription opioid misuse and community-based programs to dispose of unused opioid analgesics. In 2018, we conducted ten focus groups (n=94 participants) in 5 Appalachian counties. Thirteen themes across 5 of the HBM constructs emerged from our analysis.…
Country Boys Spit and Dip”
While tobacco use nationwide is declining, smokeless tobacco (SLT) use remains steady, particularly among men in rural areas. Despite the harms of SLT, researchers know little about what initiates and sustains this use. In this study, we argue that SLT persistence is encouraged by its salience as an emblem of rural manhood. Based on interviews with 64 male and 19 female rural high school students we find that SLT symbolizes rural masculinity, and…
Dimensions and validation of the print perceived message sensation value scale (PPMSV)
Two studies establish reliability and validity of the print perceived message sensation value scale (PPMSV). For study one, 397 participants responded to a single high- and a single low-sensation value anti-smoking message. In study two, 284 participants responded to a single high- and a single low-sensation value anti-crystal meth message. Results of an exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis suggest that the PMSV of a print…
Trauma Trainees' Multiple Competing Goals in Opioid Prescription Communication
Prescription opioids and heroin account for more than half of all drug overdose fatalities, costing an estimated 115 American lives every day. The ongoing opioid epidemic devastates communities and represents a tremendous burden to the national economy and health care system. In 2016, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy proposed action to train prescribers on the proper dispens…
Tobacco Use by College Students
Nondaily and daily smokers differed on several demographic and contextual factors, but reported mostly similar health risk behaviors
Effects of a School‐Based, Theory‐Driven HIV and Pregnancy Prevention Curriculum
More work is necessary to understand the best ways to design classroom messages that will be effective in reducing the risk behaviors of high sensation seekers and impulsive decision makers
