Antenatal magnesium sulphate for preterm foetal neuroprotection in low- and middle-income countries
Background: Antenatal magnesium sulphate reduces the risk of cerebral palsy (CP) for infants born very preterm. While endorsed by the World Health Organization for global implementation in 2015, studies underpinning this recommendation were conducted in high-income countries. Our objective was to systematically gather, organise, and map published research studies on the use of antenatal magnesium sulphate for preterm foetal neuroprotection in low…
Intersections of Modifiable Risks
We examined the relationship between subjective and objective sleep outcomes and loneliness in older women at risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Our sample consisted of 39 participants (aged 65+) with mild cognitive deficits who completed the UCLA Loneliness Scale, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and an at home sleep test, to determine presence of obstructive sleep apnea. Based on sleep quality scores, individuals categorized as “poor …
Cannabis use for Sleep Disturbance Among Older Patients in a Geriatrics Clinic
Cannabis use is growing among older adults to manage medical concerns including poor sleep. In this study, we characterized how patients seen at a geriatrics clinic use cannabis to address sleep disturbance. Specifically, we conducted an anonymous survey of 568 adults, including 83 who reported cannabis use within the past 3 years, to inquire about such use. We compared cannabis use characteristics between those using it for sleep disturbance ver…
Deleterious Association of Inhalant Use on Sleep Quality during the Covid-19 Pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic generated large amounts of stress across the globe. While acute stress negatively impacts health, defining exact consequences and behavioral interventions can be difficult. We hypothesized that a generalized increase in stress and anxiety caused by continuation of the global pandemic would negatively impact sleep quality and that ever users of e-cigarettes and conventional tobacco would have more profound alterations over ti…
