Mobile Learning Applications for Refugees: A Systematic Literature Review
The proliferation of mobile devices in everyday life since the end of the 20th century has led to mobile applications for educational purposes and the creation of the research field of mobile learning. Despite the extended research interest on the effectiveness of this field, there is limited research on mobile learning for various social groups, such as refugees, students with learning difficulties and disabilities. Due to the unprecedented numb…
Attitudes towards the Use of Educational Robotics: Exploring Pre-Service and In-Service Early Childhood Teacher Profiles
The introduction of STEM education, and specifically the implementation of educational robotics (ER), has drawn researchers’ attention and has shown that teachers play a crucial role in leading this innovation. The present study concerns in-service and pre-service early childhood teachers, focusing on their perceptions and attitudes about ER use in daily teaching practice. The data were collected via a questionnaire (N = 201) and explored using l…

Film criticism and the legitimization of a New Wave in contemporary Greek cinema
Contemporary Greek cinema garnered a great reputation in recent years, including Oscar nominations, numerous awards and distinctions in international festivals and also worldwide media coverage. The emergence of a new group of filmmakers whose creativity and avant-garde aesthetics were stimulated and heightened by the social and economic crisis was first marked by media critics (film critics and cultural journalists). As journalistic art criticis…
Preposition-drop in Greek: EPP-driven pseudo-incorporation
The paper investigates preposition (and determiner) drop in Greek. A close look at the properties of preposition-drop reveals that despite the lack of a definite determiner, the place nominal that participates in preposition-drop is interpreted as familiar. This familiarity presupposition of the place nominal is achieved via movement of NP-to-SpecDP for the satisfaction of a D-feature bundle on D. Further, the lack of strict adjacency between the…
Digital gatekeepers and website visitors of the Acropolis Museum: Revisiting Gatekeeping Theory in the Cultural Domain
Gatekeeping theory has evolved in recent years to encompass new patterns and influences in a rapidly changing digital environment. The boundary between creating and disseminating digital content is increasingly blurred, as organizations adapt both content and services to the shifting needs of their audiences. In the current case study, viewing museums as content and cultural news providers, we examine digital gatekeeping influences that lead onli…
Baal/CUP Seminar 2015: The language of money and debt: The view from the ground
On 7 and 8 September 2015, the University of Roehampton hosted a BAAL/Cambridge University Press seminar, which brought together researchers from a wide range of perspectives in terms of their objects of study and modes of investigation
Advertising modern art: A semiotic analysis of posters used to communicate about the Turner Prize award
This article probes into the visual discourse expressed in a selection of advertising posters designed to promote the ‘Turner Prize’, a contemporary art award organized by the Tate Gallery in London. Four posters were chosen from 1994 to 2011, a 17-year period in the history of the prize that was marked by controversial candidate choices, polarizing critical reviews by art critics in the media and the seemingly deliberate fostering of an audience…
Two sides of the same coin: Matter and embodiment in metaphors of money
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to document the conceptual metaphors (Lakoff and Johnson, 2003) found in the talk of Greek and Australian adults to describe how people think about money. As money becomes increasingly abstract, understanding money, dealing with debt and encouraging financial literacy become more problematic. Design/methodology/approach – Semi-structured interviews of a small sample ( n = 7) are analysed using Lakoff and Joh…
VOS in Greek
This paper looks into the VOS order in Greek and its focusing patterns. Evidence from main and embedded VOS reveals that embedded VOS is more restricted in its focusing possibilities. If the focus effects of main and embedded VOS differ, then we cannot advocate fixed Focus Projections in the syntactic architecture like the cartographic approaches do. Chomsky (2007; 2008) divides features in two types; the probe-agreement ones which trigger obliga…
Global strategies and local practices in film consumption
Media and popular culture in late modernity are commodified, as cultural industries distribute products (ways of life) via the market to their users. The growth of investment and the ongoing battle between media groups at an international level raises many questions about cinema practice, experience, meaning, esthetics and cultural practices in general. Greek cinema exhibition constitutes a specific case study which can be used to scrutinize the …
