  • Marx, Foucault, and the Secularization of Western Culture

    Open Access•Vivek Dhareshwar•ARTICLE•Rethinking Marxism•2016

Although Marx’s critique of capitalism, especially his theory of fetishism, requires experiential knowledge (my term for “spirituality”), his framework does not leave any conceptual room for such knowledge. The idea that spirituality is (perhaps the better) part of religion is a deeply held assumption of secular Western thought. Only in Michel Foucault’s late lectures do we find a Western thinker realizing that what opposed spirituality, and subs…

  • Framing the Predicament of Indian Thought

    Vivek Dhareshwar•ARTICLE•Asian Philosophy•2012

Although there is such a thing as Indian thought, it seems to play no role in the way social sciences and philosophy are practiced in India or elsewhere. The problem is not only that we no longer employ terms such as atman, avidya, dharma to reflect on our experience; the terms that we do indeed use—sovereignty, secularism, rights, civil society and political society, corruption—seem to insulate our experience from our reflection. This paper will…

  • Valorizing the Present

    Open Access•Vivek Dhareshwar•ARTICLE•Cultural Dynamics•1998•Cited by: 3•References: 5

There are many cultures. But only one culture has offered descriptions of other cultures. What are the implications of this fact for the human sciences? Until the appearance of Edward Said's Orientalism, the human sciences did not find it necessary to interrogate either the status of these descriptions or the culture that offered them. The western descriptions of other cultures have recently been contested by postcolonial theory/discourse which h…

  • The Trial of Pagans

    Open Access•Vivek Dhareshwar•ARTICLE•Cultural Dynamics•1996•Cited by: 2•References: 5

This paper argues that Balagangadhara's (1994) account of the double dynamic of Christianity is persuasive and his use of it as a partial description of the West insightful. Doubts are raised about the author's ambition to embed that account in a theory of cultural difference and the philosophical difficulties involved in stating that theories are explored by setting up a dialogue between self-descriptions of some European pagan thinkers (primari…

  • Interrogating modernity

    Tejaswini Niranjana, P Sudhir et al.•BOOK•Interrogating modernity•1993

Indian Culture' has inevitably meant in our Context the monuments of antiquity, the temple sculpture of a glorious past, the texts of ancient scriptures, all 'the wonder that was'-but if we were to recognize culture as comprising a variety of signifying practices, perhaps we would begin to make sense of the astonishing proliferation of seemingly disparate contemporary phenomena : Hindi cinema and its star system, the rath yatra and the demand for…

  • The Song of the Sirens in the Heart of Darkness the Enigma of Recit

    Vivek Dhareshwar•ARTICLE•boundary 2•1986

I propose to discuss here Maurice Blanchot's meditations on r6cit and the space of literature Conrad's Heart of Darkness. I say along with because I am not using Blanchot's reflections as a metacritical language to illuminate the narrative Heart of Darkness; on the contrary, I shall try, if only implicitly, to problematize the relationship of literary criticism to its object' Thus when I claim that Heart
