Personalized alignment of large language models and its impact on moral judgment
Understanding Regional Cultural-Psychological Variations and Their Sources in China
This research comprehensively examined regional variations in individualism and collectivism within China and the explanatory power of 20 potential factors derived from the existing cultural psychological theories, including socioecological (e.g., climates, subsistence activities, and modernization) and population (e.g., ethnicity, genetic and linguistic features) ones. Three large-scale studies were conducted. In Study 1 ( N = 18,606), we assess…
Human advantages and psychological transformations in the era of artificial intelligence

The linguistic strength and weakness of artificial intelligence
Personal Relative Deprivation and Locus of Control
OBJECTIVE: We investigated the relationship between personal relative deprivation (PRD)-resentment from the belief that one is worse off than people who are similar to oneself-and locus of control. BACKGROUND: Research has yet to comprehensively investigate whether PRD is associated with a tendency to favor external (vs. internal) explanations for self- and other-relevant outcomes. METHOD: = 6729) employed cross-sectional, experimental, and (micr…
Standing up for close others
Moral courage is defined as standing up for others and intervening when a norm is violated. This research aimed to examine the effect of relationship type between the bystander and the victim (close or distant) and the moral context in which the norm violation occurs (care/harm or fairness/reciprocity) on moral courage. Two studies ( n = 164 and n = 200) utilized a scenario method in which participants were presented with short vignettes of anoth…
Expanding our kind
Conducted in four societies—Taiwan, India, Mainland China, and the United States—this pan-cultural study extended and replicated a previous finding, with Iranian samples, of the possibility and benefits of expanding our “kind” via priming. The mechanism behind this phenomenon is explained through the principle of ontological parity. Derived from animism as articulated in Chinese folk beliefs, ontological parity refers to perceived sameness in bei…
A school rampage threatens beliefs in justice
INTRODUCTION: The current study examined whether and how severe injustice such as a school attack threatens the belief in a just world (BJW). METHOD: We collected longitudinal data on the BJW from adolescents in China who witnessed random school attacks on the news (N = 227). RESULTS: Change analyses provided evidence that the BJW increased after witnessing severe injustice. Furthermore, we tested for moderating effects of buffer variables, such …
A Follow-Up Investigation of Mental Health Among Discharged Covid-19 Patients in Wuhan, China
Objective: To understand the mental health status and its risk factors among discharged COVID-19 patients during the first month of centralized quarantine and the subsequent home isolation. Methods: The scales of the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), General Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7), and Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) were used to measure the symptoms of insomnia, anxiety, and depression in 782 COVID-19 patients during the first month of centr…
Victim Sensitivity and Its Neural Correlates Among Patients With Major Depressive Disorder
The patients with MDD show higher sensitivity to injustice as a victim, which may be independent of their disease course. The MDD patients differ from healthy controls in the neural correlates of victim sensitivity. These findings shed light on the linkage between cognitive control subserved by the DLPFC and negative bias towards the self implicated by higher victim sensitivity among the depressed patients
The mediation of news framing between public trust and nuclear risk reactions in post-Fukushima China
Although China has become the world’s most ambitious country in adopting nuclear energy, few studies have investigated the role of communication behind public acceptance of nuclear risk in this country. This study explored the association of Chinese newspapers’ framing of nuclear power with public trust in government and their reactions to nuclear risk. The results revealed that the more the respondents identified with the news framing, the more …
Psychological counselors' self
There is a huge demand of psychological counseling in China, given the growing pains along with dramatic social changes. However, it remains unclear whether psychological counselors hold special psychological qualities as compared to the general population, especially when it is hard to assess psychological professionals' personality using self-reported methods. Based on the ecological recognition technology, the present research is to explore ps…
Perception of Cross-Generational Differences in Child Behavior and Parent Socialization
China, having gone through rapid economic reform, supported by urbanization, educational expansion, and family size reduction over past decades, is an important part of a worldwide sociodemographic trend that can be summarized as a shift from community/ Gemeinschaft to society/ Gesellschaft. Correlated with this sociodemographic trend, our qualitative and quantitative analyses document intergenerational change in grandmothers' perception of socia…
Justice Concerns After School Attacks
Religion and Culture
Religion is an important topic to understand in cross-cultural psychology. More theorizing and empirical work has gone into Western religions than Eastern religions. We briefly review work on cultural differences among Western religious groups, using the framework of individualism and collectivism. Such work raises questions on how religions and cultures affect each other, how diverse cultural groups are, and how confounded country and religious …
Distributive and Procedural Justice for Self and Others
Tendencies to believe in justice are multidimensional, and some justice beliefs enhance personal well-being. These features suggest a considerable but largely overlooked potential for similarities and differences in the structure, endorsement, and wellness-promoting functions of justice beliefs across cultures. In the current research, we evaluate a recently available four-factor conceptualization of justice beliefs in samples of university stude…
