EEG-based functional connectivity uncovers frequency-specific brain network alterations induced by nostalgic music
This study aimed to clarify the neural mechanisms of nostalgic music by exploring differences in brain functional connectivity between nostalgic and non-nostalgic music using EEG-derived imaginary coherence (iCOH), which minimizes volume conduction artifacts. Thirty-six healthy right-handed participants (mean age: 22.5 ± 3.2 years, 17 males) completed a passive auditory paradigm, listening to 25 nostalgic music tracks (selected via alignment with…
The effect of instrumental and vocal musical experience on tone categorical perception in individuals in a Chinese dialect area
Introduction Previous studies have shown that music training modulates adults’ categorical perception of Mandarin tones. However, the effect of music training on tone categorical perception ability in individuals in Chinese dialect areas remains unclear. Methods We recruited three groups of college students majoring in music in Chongqing, a dialect area in southwestern China. These groups included an instrumental music group ( n = 31), a vocal mu…
The mechanism and neural substrate of musical emotions in the audio-visual modality
Previous studies on multisensory integration (MSI) of musical emotions have yielded inconsistent results. The distinct features of the music materials and different musical expertise levels of participants may account for that. This study aims to explore the neural mechanism for the audio-visual integration of musical emotions and infer the reasons for inconsistent results in previous studies by investigating the influence of the type of musical …
Relationship between empathy and emotion recognition in Chinese national music
Mindfulness Meditation Improves Musical Aesthetic Emotion Processing in Young Adults
This study explored the behavioral and neural correlates of mindfulness meditation improvement in musical aesthetic emotion processing (MAEP) in young adults, using the revised across-modal priming paradigm. Sixty-two participants were selected from 652 college students who assessed their mindfulness traits using the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS). According to the 27% ratio of the high and low total scores, participants were divided in…
Regulation of Mindfulness-Based Music Listening on Negative Emotions Related to Covid-19
The current study aimed to explore the behavioral and neural correlates of mindfulness-based music listening regulation of induced negative emotions related to COVID-19 using the face–word Stroop task. Eighty-five young adults visited the laboratory and were randomly assigned to three groups: a calm music group (CMG: n = 28), a happy music group (HMG: n = 30), and a sad music group (SMG: n = 27). Negative emotions were induced in all participants…
