Gossiping in the Polish Club
This paper explores the emotional coexistence of three groups of Polish migrants in the UK. In particular it focuses on how this coexistence is reflected in narratives-in-interaction produced by members of Polish communities. Methodologically the paper is anchored in a constructivist view of emotions, when they are seen as discursive practice, as way of speaking, rather than as some internal states associated with physiological conditions of our …
Leavers and stayers discuss returning home
There is a significant difference between previous waves of Polish migrants and the massive outflow of people from Poland after the EU expansion. Information technologies enable post-accession migrants to participate actively in an ongoing dialogue with those who stayed in the home country about, among others, various social issues related to the process of the post-communist transformation. This paper discusses an electronic newspaper forum as a…
Ruth Wodak, Rudolf de Cillia, Martin Reisigl and Karin Liebhart
Writing a review of the second edition of The Discursive Construction of National Identity has been an extremely difficult task. How to write an evaluation of an iconic volume, praised already everywhere and by everyone in the academe? Just one look at online book sellers brings ample examples of tributes, admirations and recommendations of Wodak, de Cillia, Reisigl and Liebhart’s work. A publishing history of the volume also speaks a lot about i…
Discourse and Transformation in Central and Eastern Europe
This volume explores the discursive nature of post-1989 social change in Central and Eastern Europe. Through a set of national case studies, the construction of post-communist transformation is explor
Lost in Communism, Lost in Migration
In this paper we are interested in constructions of migrant experience in the narratives of Polish post-1989 immigrants to the UK who perceive their migration as unsuccessful. We concentrate on two Polish migrants to the UK who left Poland almost immediately after the collapse of communism and have been in the UK for more than 10 years. Their emigration coincided with the beginning of the system transformations in Poland. Because of their migrati…
Border ethnography and post-communist discourses of nationality in Poland
In this article I shall explore discursive constructions of ethnicity, and in particular notions of ‘Polishness’, among members of three-generation families living in the Polish town of Zgorzelec, on the border with Germany. The data come from a Europe-wide ethnographic project studying communities living on the borders between the EU and its ascendant nations, funded by the European Commission’s 5th Framework Programme (www.borderidentities.com)…
Untold stories and the construction of identity in narratives of ethnic conflict on the Polish–German border
In this paper we are interested in the use of ‘untold stories’: parts of narratives which are implied rather than explicitly told by speakers. More specifically, we demonstrate how Polish informants from the towns of Gubin and Zgorzelec on the Polish–German border use untold stories as a means of situating themselves or other Poles in a position of advantage in conflictual situations between Poles and Germans. We demonstrate that our informants e…

Shopping for a New Identity
This article aims to show the varying constructions of the Polish–German border in the Polish border town of Zgorzelec. We are interested in how informants from three generations discursively position the frontier itself and the two towns on its either side: Polish Zgorzelec and German Görlitz. The data comes from a Europe-wide ethnographic project studying communities living on the borders between the European Union (EU) and its ascendant nation…
