  • Jody Benjamin. The Texture of Change

    Open Access•Koichi Kobayashi•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2025

  • Optimal Bayesian chronological modeling for high resolution chronology for the Middle Jomon of Kanto region (Honshu Island, Japan) approaching a generational scale

Open Access•Y Kanezaki, Takayuki Omori et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2025

In recent years, the increasing accumulation of radiocarbon dating data in Jomon research has progressed, creating a foundation for more detailed chronological estimates of the Jomon period’s high-resolution typo-chronology. However, there remains a gap between relative chronologies based on typology and radiocarbon data. A key issue arises from discrepancies between the concept of keishiki (“type” in Japanese) as a time unit of relative chronolo…

Koichi Kobayashi, KAZUO KOBAYASHI•ARTICLE•African Economic History•2017

This article proposes to give a new answer to one of the central questions in African and global economic histories: how West Africa contributed to economies outside the region. Recent studies have highlighted that consumers played a significant role in the processes of trade and production. The article combines this consumer-led perspective with a new set of quantitative and qualitative data. Trade figures drawn from the British and French trade…

  • Radiocarbon dating of one human and two dog burials from the Kamikuroiwa rock shelter site, Ehime Prefecture

    Open Access•Takashi Gakuhari, Hajime Komiya et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropological Science•2015•Cited by: 7•References: 1

Two complete dog skeletons were recovered during archeological excavations from 1961 to 1970 at the Kamikuroiwa rock shelter, a site that yielded a series of cultural entities from the Late Pleistocene, Incipient Jomon, and Early Jomon periods. Since two dogs were buried close to human skeletons, it was thought that these dogs had been buried by Jomon people, and hence provided the oldest direct evidence of Canis domestication in Japan. However, …

  • Mitochondrial DNA analysis of the human skeleton of the initial Jomon phase excavated at the Yugura cave site, Nagano, Japan

    Open Access•Noboru Adachi, Junmei Sawada et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropological Science•2013•Cited by: 12•References: 2

Obtaining genetic information about early humans is indispensable to our understanding of the demographic history of mankind. In the present study, we performed a detailed mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) analysis of a skeleton of the initial Jomon era unearthed from the Yugura cave site in Nagano, Japan, which was dated to 7920–7795 calBP by direct 14C dating. mtDNA of the Yugura skeleton was designated to haplogroup D4b2, which is widely observed in p…
