    Open Access•Wendell C Bennett•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1950•Cited by: 8•References: 2

In pre-Columbian Peru, conditions favorable for population concentration and cultural development were largely restricted to the coastal valleys and the high structural basins in the mountains. Most archaeologists who have dealt with comparative chronology have grouped adjacent valleys and compared their combined cultural sequences with those of a highland basin. The justification for this procedure has been the assumption that cultural uniformit…

  • Lost City of the Incas

Wendell C Bennett, Hiram Bingham•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•1949

First published in the 1950s, this is a classic account of the discovery in 1911 of the lost city of Machu Picchu. In 1911 Hiram Bingham, a pre-historian with a love of exotic destinations, set out to Peru in search of the legendary city of Vilcabamba, capital city of the last Inca ruler, Manco Inca. With a combination of doggedness and good fortune he stumbled on the perfectly preserved ruins of Machu Picchu perched on a cloud-capped ledge 2000 …

  • The Peruvian Co-Tradition

    Open Access•Wendell C Bennett•ARTICLE•Memoirs of the Society for…•1948

The culture area concept as developed by Wissler has had only limited applicability to archaeology, since it depends too much on specific elements or traits, is too heavily weighted by subsistence, is not sharply enough defined, is too inclusive, and is too static in time. Although Wissler divided the New World into a number of archaeological culture areas, these have not been very meaningful, since they lump gross elements with total disregard f…

  • A Revised Sequence for the South Titicaca Basin

    Open Access•Wendell C Bennett•ARTICLE•Memoirs of the Society for…•1948

Acareful review of field notes and collections from Tiahuanaco, Chiripa, and Pariti and comparison with the preliminary reports by Kidder on Pucara and M. Tschopik on the north Titicaca basin suggest a change in the position of Chiripa in the Bolivian sequences previously reported. The evidence for this change is briefly reviewed. The Chiripa mound has four major levels: (1) top soil, from 0 to .50 meters; (2) post-house level, from .50 to 2.0 me…

A brief notation of these articles and a bibliography will remedy in part their omission from the original text.Wassén (1936) has published a report of his excavations at the Hacienda of El Dorado between the villages of Yotoco and Restrepo in the Cauca Valley region of the western cordillera of Colombia. • Archaeological Work in South America, 1934 to 1936

    Open Access•Wendell C Bennett•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1937•References: 8

Two years ago Lothrop (1934) published a summary of archaeological work in South America covering the years 1931-1934. This article continues the summary up to 1936. Relatively few archaeological expeditions have come to my attention in this period and consequently the review is based largely on published accounts. Such field reports as are available are incorporated under the proper sections. Thompson (1936) has published a guide leaflet on the …
