Health Status and Economic Assimilation of North Korean Defectors in South Korea
This study investigates the health status of defectors from North Korea and their process of assimilating into the economy of South Korea. Utilizing data from the National Health Insurance database spanning 2003 to 2022, we constructed a comprehensive dataset covering nearly all North Korean defectors in South Korea, alongside a 2 percent control sample that was randomly selected from the national population. Our findings indicate a higher incide…
Health-Seeking Patterns of Female North Korean Defectors in South Korea for Mental Health
Utilizing data from South Korea’s National Health Insurance Database, which covers the entire population, this study investigates the health-seeking patterns of North Korean defectors in South Korea, focusing on mental health issues. We find that female North Korean defectors utilize mental healthcare services significantly more than male defectors and more than their matched counterparts among either South Korean natives or other immigrants. Reg…
A Study on the Battery Recycling Process and Risk Estimation
The demand for the use of secondary batteries is increasing rapidly worldwide in order to solve global warming and achieve carbon neutrality. Major minerals used to produce cathode materials, which are key raw materials for secondary batteries, are treated as conflict minerals due to their limited reserves, and accordingly, research on the battery recycling industry is urgent for the sustainable secondary battery industry. There is a significant …
Numerical Investigation of Overtopping Prevention for Optimal Safety Dike Design
Leakage accidents at chemical facilities have a negative impact on both the environment and human life, and the government has established and implemented regulations on dikes in order to minimize such accidents. However, the overtopping phenomenon in which chemicals overflow the dike due to catastrophic leakage requires additional safeguards. In this study, the mitigation effect was confirmed by simulating tanks and dikes using various deflector…
Geopolitical Risk on Stock Returns
Geopolitical Risk on Stock Returns
We investigate how corporate stock returns respond to geopolitical risk in the case of South Korea, which has experienced large and unpredictable geopolitical swings that originate from North Korea. To do so, a monthly index of geopolitical risk from North Korea (the GPRNK index) is constructed using automated keyword searches in South Korean media. The GPRNK index, designed to capture both upside and downside risk, corroborates that geopolitical…
Classification of Human Failure in Chemical Plants
The increasing use and distribution of chemicals are causing serious chemical accidents such as fires, explosions, and leaks during manufacturing and handling. In most cases, all risks caused by chemicals are classified as accidents due to defects in process facilities, human errors, and multi-cause accidents. Among chemical accidents caused by human errors, accurate analysis of accidents caused by the complex action of various types of human fai…
Assessment of Noise Exposure and Its Characteristics in the Intensive Care Unit of a Tertiary Hospital
Noise generated in the intensive care unit (ICU) adversely affects both critically ill patients and medical staff. Recently, several attempts have been made to reduce ICU noise levels, but reliable and effective solutions remain elusive. This study aimed to provide evidence on noise distributions in the ICU to protect patient health. For one week, we measured noise levels in isolated rooms, open units, and nursing stations in medical, surgical, a…
