Ethyl loflazepate as a treatment for patients with idiopathic and psychogenic taste disorder
BACKGROUND: Ethyl loflazepate (EL) is a benzodiazepine derivative that has been reported to activate the gustatory cortex. Our department routinely uses EL as a first-line treatment for idiopathic and psychogenic taste disorders, although little has been reported in the literature with respect to patient outcomes, so we conducted a retrospective study examining its safety and efficacy. METHODS: Between 2008 and 2020, 49 patients (14 males and 35 …
Observational Variables for Considering a Switch from a Normal to a Dysphagia Diet among Older Adults Requiring Long-Term Care
This one-year multicenter longitudinal study aimed to assess whether older adult residents of long-term care facilities should switch from a normal to a dysphagia diet. Using the results of our previous cross-sectional study as baseline, older adults were subdivided into those who maintained a normal diet and those who switched to a dysphagia diet. The explanatory variables were age, sex, body mass index (BMI), Barthel Index, clinical dementia ra…
A Cross-Sectional Study on the Relationship between Oral Function and Sarcopenia in Japanese Patients with Regular Dental Maintenance
We aimed to clarify the relationship between oral function assessments regarding oral hypofunction and sarcopenia in patients who had completed treatment for organic dental problems, including oral pain, removable denture fit, and tooth loss. This cross-sectional study included 269 patients aged ≥65 years (mean age 74.9 ± 6.50 years, 133 men, 136 women) who visited a dental clinic between June 2019 and March 2021. We evaluated oral function and s…
Efficacy of rikkosan for primary burning mouth syndrome
BACKGROUND: Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a chronic condition characterized by pain in the oral cavity. Kampo medicine is a traditional Japanese medical system that has its roots partly in ancient Chinese medicine. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of rikkosan-a traditional Japanese herbal medicine (Kampo)-in the treatment of primary BMS. MAIN BODY: A single-center retrospective study was conducted in 32 patients who were di…
Association between Weight Loss and Food Form in Older Individuals Residing in Long-Term Care Facilities
Changing the food form for older adults requiring nursing care from a regular to dysphagia diet is thought to impact their nutritional status. We assessed the association between changes in food form and weight loss over 1 year in older adults. Older adults residing in long-term care facilities in Japan ( n = 455) who participated in the baseline (2018) and follow-up (2019) surveys were divided into two groups (regular diet, n = 284; dysphagia di…
Morphological Observations on the Dentiton of a Giantism Patient and a Dwarfism Patient
The dentitions of both a giantism patient (male, 219cm in stature) and a dwarfism patient (female, 114cm in stature) were studied. The observations and measurements were made on the plaster casts taken from the upper and the lower jaws. Anatomical details of the teeth and the dental arches are to be shown in the photographs, and the measured values are given in the tables. The results are summarized as follows :(1) No congenital absent tooth was r…
