We examine whether delaying selection into secondary school streams can reduce socioeconomic inequality in cognitive aging. We link data on individuals aged 50+ from 14 European countries in the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) to a newly compiled database on reforms that postponed the age of first tracking. Exploiting within-country, within-cohort variation in tracking age, we find that later tracking significantly reduc…
Preparedness and response to the international poliovirus and diphtheria reintroduction alert
Background: Diphtheria and polio continue to pose significant public health challenges globally, making sustained high vaccination coverage crucial. This study examines the strategies adopted in the Veneto Region to enhance vaccination rates for diphtheria and polio among priority target groups and improve poliovirus surveillance, following the WHO alert about the potential reintroduction and circulation of the two pathogens. Aim: The main object…
Surveillance of Outbreaks of Sars-CoV-2 Infections at School in the Veneto Region
During the COVID-19 pandemic, many countries adopted various non-pharmacological interventions to contain the number of infections. The most often used policy was school closures. We describe the strategy adopted by the Veneto Regional Authority to contain transmission in school settings. This included a detailed school surveillance system, strict contact tracing, and maintaining school attendance with self-monitoring for symptoms whenever possib…
Exposure to Perfluoroalkyl Substances and Mortality for Covid-19
In conclusion, we observed a higher mortality risk for COVID-19 in a population heavily exposed to PFAS, which was possibly explained by PFAS immunosuppression, bioaccumulation in lung tissue, or pre-existing disease being related to PFAS
