Archaepelago”: Island Intimacies ( Naeryŏk ) and Weathered Flesh in Jeju Art
This article examines how artists from Jeju Island, South Korea, envision intimacies across spatial and spiritual severances imposed by Jeju's history as a militarily occupied and developmentally expropriated island. The article proposes “archaepelago,” or archaeological considerations of islands as a way of conducting archipelagic studies. Such focusing on vertical relations reveals new resonances in lateral connections across islands. Paying at…
Minor Settler Grief: Korean Diaspora, Settler Colonialism, and the Pastoral Fantasy in Minari (2021)
The critically acclaimed film Minari (2021), directed by Lee Isaac Chung, has been recognized for its emotionally moving on-screen representation of a rural Asian American experience. Building on transpacific scholarship, the present essay examines Minari as a narrative of "minor settler grief," an expression of grief by minor settlers that is closely tied to colonial and militarized aesthetics of earth across the Pacific. The article ties Minari…
Cold War Cosmopolitanism: Period Style in 1950s Korean Cinema
Cold War Cosmopolitanism is a dedicated study of 1950s Korea through the figure of Han Hyung-mo (Han Hyŏngmo), an auteur at the center of South Korea’s “Golden Age” of cinema, who then was largely forgotten in the ensuing South Korean film history. Only a great commitment to the films at the heart of the book can produce such a focused and expansive work, and for this reason, the book will be a rewarding read and a useful open-access resource for…

The transpacific tempest: Relational sovereignty and spiritual sociogenesis
This article examines the intersection of The Tempest adaptations and militarization across the Caribbean and Pacific. Through an analysis of the South Korean writer Ch'oe In-Hun's 1973 novel The Typhoon, it argues that past speculative visions for a decolonial future continue to offer a critical imaginary of decolonization in the Pacific and of reunification of Korea. Building on the works of Sylvia Wynter, Frantz Fanon, and Édouard Glissant, th…

Decolonising Philosophy
Based on Maldonado-Torres’s formulation of the term, we conceive the decolonial turn as a form of liberating and decolonising reason beyond the liberal and Enlightened emancipation of rationality, and beyond the more radical Euro-critiques that have failed to consistently challenge the legacies of Eurocentrism and white male heteronormativity (often Eurocentric critiques of Eurocentrism). We complement Maldonado-Torres’s account of the decolonial…
