Sex-based differences in penalty situations and shido types considering when the contest ends in elite judo
This study aimed to ascertain whether penalty situations and the types of shido are associated with the sex, regardless of when the contest ends, whether penalty situations and the types of shido are associated with when the contest ends, and whether this association is influenced by sex. Data from 2340 contests (3178 penalties) from the 2018, 2019, and 2021 World Judo Championships were analyzed. Chi-square tests with standardized residuals and …
Events and event records (scoring and penalties) across temporal units in elite judo contests
Introduction: This study examines the distribution of events and event records (EVRs) in elite judo competitions, encompassing both male and female categories. Sample: By analyzing data from the 2018, 2019, and 2021 World Championships, the study incorporates 6487 events (EVs) and 2340 contests classified by their last event (cEV). Results: The predominant occurrence of EV2 and EV3 in male (23.2% and 36.6%) and female (26.8% and 31.7%) contests s…
Effects of Structured Physical Activity on Motor Fitness in Preschool Children
The aim was to investigate the impact of a specific structured movement activities (SMA) program compared to free play activity (FRP) on the strength, speed, agility, coordination, and balance of motor fitness (MF) in 6-year-old boys and girls. A total of 53 children (24 boys, 29 girls) were randomly allocated to either the SMA group or the FRP group. Both group activities were administered three times a week over a 6-month period. MF variables w…

Youth Judokas Competing in Higher Age Groups Leads to a Short-Term Success
Coaches of youth judo athletes might be under the influence of some extraordinary elite judo athletes that have won elite competitions at a relatively young age and might put youth athletes under pressure to gain as much fighting experience as fast as possible. The present study aims to present a 5-year competition structure, volume and age competition categories (ACC) range in which youth judokas competed with 10-year dropout status. Data from 4…
Monitoring of Eccentric Hamstring Strength and Eccentric Derived Strength Ratios in Judokas from a Single Weight Category
This study reports the isokinetic strength values of judokas in the under 73 kg category, emphasising eccentric hamstring strength and eccentric derived strength ratios DCR and HEC. It was shown that asymmetries are better detected using eccentric testing and that the dominant leg in judokas had stronger eccentric hamstring strength resulting in higher DCR and HEC
The Effect of Height on Drop Jumps in Relation to Somatic Parameters and Landing Kinetics
The aim of this study was to assess the effect of drop height and selected somatic parameters on the landing kinetics of rebound jumps in force and power production, performed by male and female student athletes. Twenty female and forty male students with a sports background participated in the experiment (mean and standard deviation (± SD): age 20.28 ± 1.31 years, height 166.78 ± 5.29 cm, mass 62.23 ± 7.21 kg and 21.18 ± 1.29, 182.18 ± 6.43, 78.…
Evaluation of the Pre-Planned and Non-Planed Agility Performance
This study assessed differences in agility performance between athletes of team and individual sports by assessing change-of-direction speed (CODS) as pre-planned agility and reactive agility (RA) as non-planed in different spatial configurations. The study involved 36 individual (sprint, hurdles, jumping, tennis, and judo) and 34 team (soccer, basketball, and handball) athletes. CODS and RA were measured with a light-based reactive training syst…

This report describes the 6th European Judo Science & Research Symposium & 5th Scientific and Professional Conference - “Applicable Research in Judo,” held in Porec, Croatia, on June 12-14, 2019. The three-days conference included three keynote speakers on the first day which were followed by 12 presentations in two sections on the second day and a round table that closed the third and final day of the program. Proceedings book of the conference …
The benefits of Functional Movement Screen in judo
With the development of screening methods, simple screening tools could commonly be used to assess movement quality in real-world conditions. One of those methods is the functional movement screen (FMS), that was developed to helps determine the fundamental movement patterns of an individual. FMS test was administered to 9 elite judokas aged 22 ± 4.24 years, height 176.44 ± 7.44 and weight 79.44 ± 15.92 kg. The overall FMS score was 17.56 ± 1.59.…
Qualitative and quantitative methods in the study of martial arts and combat sports
In this panel, five experts present their personal experiences in martial arts and combat sports (MA&CS) research. These experiences represent the two classic approaches to our studies: the quantitative and the qualitative. Above all, the panel aims to foster debate and reflection on the complementarity of these methods when trying to embrace the complexity of MA&CS
