Re-theorizing culture-based maternal child-rearing
Compared with urban mothers, rural Chinese mothers are commonly stereotyped as less educated, precariously employed, or migrant workers. Within the dominant intensive mothering discourse, their child-rearing practices are frequently judged as authoritarian or inadequate. Yet such depictions overlook the cultural logic and aspirational functions embedded in their maternal strategies. Drawing on 24 oral history narratives from rural and urban mothe…
Peering into the algorithmic black box
Drawing on experimental and reverse-engineering approaches, this study situates algorithmic governance within the broader context of digital society and reflects on results of an experiment where multiple virtual accounts were constructed that engage in long-term, realistic interactions with digital platforms in order to penetrate the politicized “black box” of algorithms. It examines how algorithmic governance shapes the heterogeneity of informa…
Can Heart Rate Variability (HRV) Be Used as a Biomarker of Thermal Comfort for Mine Workers
This study aimed to determine whether heart rate variability (HRV) can express the thermal comfort of mine workers. Eight subjects ran on a treadmill (5.5 km/h) to simulate heavy labor in three kinds of mining environments (22 °C/90%, 26 °C/90%, 30 °C/90%), respectively. Based on the measured electrocardiogram (ECG) data, the HRV of the subjects was calculated. The results showed that the HRV indices changed obviously under different temperature …
Analysis of Heat Stress and the Indoor Climate Control Requirements for Movable Refuge Chambers
Movable refuge chambers are a new kind of rescue device for underground mining, which is believed to have a potential positive impact on reducing the rate of fatalities. It is likely to be hot and humid inside a movable refuge chamber due to the metabolism of trapped miners, heat generated by equipment and heat transferred from outside. To investigate the heat stress experienced by miners trapped in a movable refuge chamber, the predicted heat st…
