  • Leveraging artificial intelligence to accelerate competency development in diagnostic reasoning of medical students

Moushumi Sur, Supaporn Dissaneevate et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Teacher•2026

INTRODUCTION: Diagnostic errors remain a critical patient safety concern, yet teaching diagnostic reasoning is challenging due to its complex, context-specific nature. Traditional teaching methods emphasize analytical reasoning but often neglect non-analytical, pattern recognition processes that are grounded in script theory. Script theory highlights illness scripts-structured mental representations of diseases-as foundational to diagnostic exper…

  • Defining three principles for credible evidence synthesis and reviews in health professions education

Open Access•Michelle Daniel, Morris Gordon et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Teacher•2026

As reviews become increasingly central to informing educational practice and guiding research in health professions education, the need for methodological clarity and quality has grown. This Commentary highlights three foundational principles - alignment, rigor, and transparency - that underpin high-quality reviews, regardless of type. We illustrate how these principles apply across commonly used review types, including systematic, scoping, reali…

  • Investigating Main Effects and Moderators of Linear Number Board Games

Open Access•Gena Nelson, Peter Boedeker et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Educational Research•2025

The purpose of this study was to conduct a meta-analysis and review of studies reporting the quality of linear number board games. This meta-analysis included 18 preschool to second-grade studies with 123 effect sizes that yielded a statistically significant summary effect (g = .21, 95% CI (.08, 0.34), p = .004) on children’s mathematics outcomes. Nine moderators explained a statistically significant amount of variance in effect sizes, including …

  • PharmaCore

Munder Zagaar, Peter Boedeker et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Teacher•2024

WHAT WAS THE EDUCATIONAL CHALLENGE?: Diminishing emphasis on pharmacology education in medical schools has resulted in a concerning lack of prescribing knowledge among physician graduates. These concerns mirror our graduates' expressed dissatisfaction with the structure and quality of pharmacology educational experiences over the past 5 years. WHAT WAS THE SOLUTION?: PharmaCORE, a web-based instructional dashboard, was developed as an interactive…

  • Developing and Validating a 15-Item True/False Measure of News Literacy Knowledge

Open Access•Adam Maksl, Peter Boedeker et al.•ARTICLE•Communication Research•2024

Given growing interest in the potential importance of news literacy around the world, a theoretically grounded and empirically validated measure of news literacy is essential. Building on existing theory, we developed and validated a 15-item true/false measure of news literacy knowledge. This measure comprehensively operationalizes the five C’s of news literacy—context, creation, content, circulation, and consumption—in a concise, adaptable, know…

  • A Meta-Analysis and Quality Review of Mathematics Interventions Conducted in Informal Learning Environments with Caregivers and Children

Open Access•Gena Nelson, Hannah Carter et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Educational Research•2024

The purposes of this study included conducting a meta-analysis and reviewing the study reporting quality of math interventions implemented in informal learning environments (e.g., the home) by children’s caregivers. This meta-analysis included 25 preschool to third-grade math interventions with 83 effect sizes that yielded a statistically significant summary effect (g = 0.26, 95% CI [0.07, 0.45) on children’s math achievement. Significant moderat…

  • Attention to the integration of literacy

Open Access•Hannah Carter, Gena Nelson et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology in the Schools•2024

Links between the development of early literacy and math skills are well documented. This systematic review focuses on how literacy is incorporated into informal math intervention studies for children in preschool to third grade, which has implications for researchers and those training caregivers to support their children at home. We reviewed 51 experimental or quasi‐experimental studies published from 1981 to 2021 that investigated the effectiv…

  • Covid-19 public health lessons in science class boost knowledge and efficacy beliefs

Open Access•Peter Boedeker, Alana Newell et al.•ARTICLE•Health Education Journal•2023

Background: Integrating public health into science courses helps students grasp the links between health recommendations and scientific principles. During COVID-19, a team of 19 educators, scientists and clinicians designed 25 science inquiry lessons to enhance disease knowledge and prevention strategies among school-aged children. The efficacy of two lessons was evaluated. Design: Pre-/post-evaluation; both quantitative and qualitative data were…

  • Socioeconomic status and early reading achievement

Open Access•Zachary T Barnes, Peter Boedeker et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Reading•2022

Studies have demonstrated significant associations between executive function (EF) and reading ability. Many of these studies have evaluated this association through composite EF skills. In this study, we evaluated the indirect effects of working memory (WM) and cognitive flexibility (CF) in the relation between kindergarten socioeconomic status (SES) and first‐grade reading achievement. Through a two‐period estimation of mediating effects, we al…

  • Implementation of Physical Activity in US Elementary Schools

Open Access•Blake Densley, Hannah G Calvert et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

The intentional integration of physical activity in elementary school classrooms-including brief instructional breaks for activity, or integration into lessons-can benefit children's physical activity and education outcomes. Teachers are key implementation agents, but despite physical activity in the classroom being an evidence-informed practice, many teachers do not regularly implement it. The aim of this study was to obtain updated nationally r…

  • Prevalence of Evidence-Based School Meal Practices and Associations with Reported Food Waste across a National Sample of U.S. Elementary Schools

    Open Access•Hannah G Calvert, Punam Ohri-Vachaspati et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Providing meals at school is an important part of the hunger safety net for children in the United States and worldwide; however, many children do not receive school meals even when they qualify for federally-subsidized free or reduced-priced meals. This study investigates the prevalence of several evidence-based practices that have previously been shown to increase the reach and impact of school meals. A survey was sent to a national sample of U…
