Public Support for Alcohol-Control Policies and Political Ideology in the US
This cross-sectional study examines the role of US adults’ political affiliation, perception about alcohol use and cancer, and sociodemographic and behavioral factors in banning outdoor alcohol advertising and adding cancer warnings on alcohol containers
HPV vaccination in Africa in the Covid-19 era
Introduction: Although the burden of cervical cancer in Africa is highest, HPV vaccination coverage remains alarmingly low in this region. Providers' knowledge and recommendation are key drivers of HPV vaccination uptake. Yet, evidence about providers' knowledge and recommendation practices about the HPV vaccine against a backdrop of emerging vaccine hesitancy fueled by the COVID-19 pandemic is lacking in Africa. Methods: A cross-sectional study …
Association of perceived neighborhood air quality problems with attempt to quit cigarette smoking
Background: Cigarette smoking is the major preventable cause of premature deaths in the United States. Attempting to quit smoking is an important step toward smoking cessation. Although it has been studied extensively, limited information on the association between attempts to quit smoking and neighborhood air quality problems is available. Therefore, we examined the association between attempts to quit smoking in the past year and perceived neig…
Secondhand tobacco smoke exposure in homes and vehicles in youth
Significant efforts are needed to develop targeted interventions to reduce SHSe in homes and vehicles, particularly in these vulnerable populations
Prevalence and disparities in receiving medical advice to quit tobacco use in the US adult population
Introduction Evidence suggests that advice from health care professionals (HCP) increases the likelihood of quit attempts and successful quitting of tobacco use. However, previous studies primarily focussed on cigarette smoking and did not include all forms of tobacco products. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and disparities in receiving HCP’s advice to quit tobacco use (combustible or noncombustible) in the US adult population. Me…
Perceptions of the Addictiveness of Low-Nicotine Cigarettes Versus Typical Cigarettes and Exposure to Tobacco Industry-Sponsored Corrective Campaign
BACKGROUND: In 2017, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a regulatory plan to reduce the nicotine content of cigarettes. This study examines the association of exposure to industry-sponsored corrective statements on perceptions of the addictiveness of low-nicotine cigarettes relative to typical cigarettes within the general US population. METHODS: The study comprised 4975 US adult respondents of the 2019 Health Information Natio…
Differences in Sun Protection Behaviors Between Rural and Urban Communities in Texas
Purpose The increasing incidence of skin cancer is a global health issue. In order to identify at‐risk populations in Texas, we compared sun protection behaviors and sunburn history across rural and urban counties. Methods An online health screening survey collected data from a nonprobability sample of Texas residents in 2018. Data were weighted by sex, age, race, and ethnicity. Multinomial multivariable logistic regression identified key factors…
Practical Barriers and Ethical Challenges in Genetic Data Sharing
The underlying ethos of dbGaP is that access to these data by secondary data analysts facilitates advancement of science. NIH has required that genome-wide association study data be deposited in the Database of Genotypes and Phenotypes (dbGaP) since 2003. In 2013, a proposed updated policy extended this requirement to next-generation sequencing data. However, recent literature and anecdotal reports suggest lingering logistical and ethical concern…
The CHRNA3 rs578776 Variant is Associated with an Intrinsic Reward Sensitivity Deficit in Smokers
A compromised brain reward system has been postulated as a key feature of drug dependence. We examined whether several polymorphisms of genes found to regulate nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) and dopamine expression were related to an intrinsic reward sensitivity (IRS) deficit we previously identified among a subgroup of smokers using event-related potentials (ERPs). We examined genetic polymorphisms within the CHRNA5-A3-B4 gene cluster …
