Implicit bias in large language models
We provide experimental evidence of implicit racial bias in a large language model (specifically ChatGPT 3.5) in the context of an educational task and discuss implications for the use of these tools in educational contexts. Specifically, we presented ChatGPT with identical student writing passages alongside various descriptions of student demographics, including race, socioeconomic status, and school type. Results indicate that when directly pro…
Uncovering the Hidden Curriculum in Generative AI
In this article, we explore the concept of a “hidden curriculum” within generative AI, specifically Large Language Models (LLMs), and its intersection with the hidden curriculum in education. We highlight how AI, trained on biased human data, can perpetuate societal inequities and discriminatory practices despite appearing objective. We present a technology audit that examines how LLMs score and provide feedback on student writing samples paired …
TPACK in the age of ChatGPT and Generative AI
The educational impact of Generative AI (GenAI) technologies, such as ChatGPT, has received significant attention. We use the TPACK framework to discuss the types of knowledge teachers require to effectively use GenAI tools. We highlight the qualities of GenAI that make it like other digital technologies (they are protean, opaque, and unstable) as well as qualities that make it revolutionary (namely, they are generative and social). We describe h…

Parents/Peers, and Delinquency
Criminologists have long recognized the importance of family and peers in the etiology of delinquency, but these two influences are commonly analyzed in isolation. However, if peers are treated as potential instigators of delinquency (following differential association theory) and parents as potential barriers to delinquency (following control theory), a crucial question emerges: Is parental influence capable of counteracting the influence of del…
