  • Occupational disorders

    Open Access•Hans Ekbrand, Lotta Dellve•ARTICLE•Social Sciences & Humanities Open•2025

Background Ensuring decent and safe working conditions, minimizing the risks of serious occupational injuries, and upholding nondiscriminatory rights to compensation for such disorders are central policy objectives for sustainable development. Workers that nevertheless suffer from occupational disorders should be entitled to compensation. This article examines if this de jure entitlement is enforced in a non-discriminatory way by comparing how wo…

  • Intimate Person Violence and Child Deprivation in Low- and Middle-Income Countries

    Open Access•B Hallerod, Hans Ekbrand•ARTICLE•Child Indicators Research•2025•References: 6

Nearly one in three women lives in a relationship where she is exposed to intimate partner violence (IPV), with the wife as the victim and the husband as the perpetrator. Beyond the imperative to prevent violence against women for their own well-being, IPV also has substantial effects on children. This study examines the associations between mothers’ experiences of IPV and three indicators reflecting fundamental aspects of child deprivation—morta…

  • Men's Economic Abuse Toward Women in Sweden

    Open Access•Linnéa Bruno, Sofia Strid et al.•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 1

Drawing from a nationally representative survey ( n = 6,611), this article analyses the prevalence of men's economic abuse toward women in Sweden. Economic abuse is still a relatively marginalized area of research but is increasingly recognized as a distinct type of intimate partner violence. A few Swedish studies have specifically focused on economic abuse, yet none of which with a quantitative approach. A main finding is that motherhood signifi…

Open Access•Sofia Strid, Hans Ekbrand et al.•ARTICLE•Tidsskrift for kjønnsforskning•2023

  • Is Democracy Associated with Reduction of Poverty, Child Mortality and Child Deprivation in Low-income Countries

    Open Access•B Hallerod, Hans Ekbrand•ARTICLE•Child Indicators Research•2023•References: 27

Is democracy related to lower poverty rates and better living conditions for children in developing countries? Multiple sources have confirmed that living conditions in low- and middle-income countries have improved significantly during the past decade. This development coincides with a period of economic growth and, until recently, a trend towards increasing democratization of many of the world’s political systems. In the present paper, we use d…

  • Local Conditions for Anti-immigrant Violence

Open Access•A Tornberg, Mattias Wahlström et al.•ARTICLE•Terrorism and Political Violence•2023

This study uses a novel approach to identifying local contextual conditions conducive, alone or in combination to far-right political violence. The studied case is asylum housing attacks occurring in Sweden 2015–16. Using a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis of eighty-six Swedish municipalities, forty-two of which have experienced arson attacks against refugee housing facilities, we operationalize and test four hypotheses derived from the…

  • Metoo

Open Access•Emma Engdahl, Hans Ekbrand et al.•ARTICLE•Sociologisk Forskning•2021

  • Dynamics of violent and dehumanizing rhetoric in far-right social media

    Open Access•Mattias Wahlström, A Tornberg et al.•ARTICLE•New Media & Society•2020•Cited by: 30•References: 17

This article sheds light on mechanisms by which online social interactions contribute to instigating far-right political violence. It presents an analysis of how violence against ethnic and religious minorities is motivated and legitimized in social media, as well as the situational conditions for such violent rhetoric. Online violent rhetoric in a Swedish public far-right social media discussion group was studied using a combination of machine-l…

  • How experience affects assessment – a longitudinal study of assessment of university students’ essays

Mikael Jansson, Maria Jansson et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Higher Education•2019

The study shows how experience changes the way examiners assess students’ essays. Using a large number of written assessments, 192 examiners were followed over a period of five years, and the contents of their assessments were analysed both quantitatively and qualitatively. Multilevel regression analysis revealed that, with experience, examiners tended to make more positive remarks and provide more instructions. Qualitative analysis of the assess…

  • Apoe ε4 and the long arm of social inequity

Open Access•CAROLINE HASSELGREN, Hans Ekbrand et al.•ARTICLE•Ageing and Society•2019•References: 70

It is well established that carriers of the apolipoprotein E ( APOE ) ε4 allele run a greater risk of developing Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia and a strongly age-related condition known to disproportionally affect women. Low educational attainment also stands out as a prominent risk factor, and it has been suggested that occupational class plays a similar role in disease susceptibility. Not yet fully explored, however, is …

  • Socioeconomic status, gender and dementia

Open Access•CAROLINE HASSELGREN, Lotta Dellve et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2018

It is a well-established fact that unfavourable social and economic conditions have a negative impact on health and longevity. Recent findings suggest that this is also true of age-related dementias. Yet most common indicators of socioeconomic status (SES) say very little about the actual mechanisms at play in disease development. The present paper explores five work exposure characteristics, all of which have a clear social gradient, that could …

  • The more gender equity, the less child poverty? A multilevel analysis of malnutrition and health deprivation in 49 low- and middle-income countries

  • Injury events sustained in residential environments

Charlotta Thodelius, Robert Ekman et al.•ARTICLE•Housing and Society•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 2

The aim is to analyze how age and physical (dis)ability jointly condition the probability of different types of injuries in residential settings, in order to identify injury countermeasures. There is a need to identify risk factors associated with injuries involving disabled people in their homes. The data include 62,674 records of unintentional injuries in the residential settings from Injury Database 2001–2015. Injuries were twice as likely to …

  • Inter-state differences in caste-specific risks for child deprivation in India

Hans Ekbrand, Shailen Nandy•ARTICLE•Journal of Poverty and Social…•2017

The issue of caste has long been an important structural cause of poverty in India, with certain groups and communities socially and physically excluded from the benefits of national economic and social development. While differences between groups are often explained at national and state levels, this paper focuses instead on the issue of inter-state caste-specific risks of child poverty and basic needs deprivation. We show that while children f…

  • Juvenile firesetting in schools

Hans Ekbrand, Sara Uhnoo•ARTICLE•Journal of Youth Studies•2015•References: 1

This article examines why, and under what circumstances, young people illegally set fire to schools. Utilizing court and police records from cases of illegal firesetting in Swedish schools where offenders were aged 21 or younger, a number of crime scene and offender characteristics are compiled and analysed using correspondence analysis. First, four main clusters of such characteristics are identified. Next, offenders’ accounts of their motives a…

  • In-work poverty and labour market trajectories

Open Access•B Hallerod, Hans Ekbrand et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of European Social Policy•2015•Cited by: 27•References: 5

Is in-work poverty a low-wage or an unemployment problem, and is it the same problem all across Europe? Because of the definitional ambiguity, we really do not know. In this article, we use longitudinal European Union-Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC) data from 22 countries and derive a set of distinct clusters of labour market trajectories (LMTs) from information about monthly labour market position from a 36-month observation…

  • Financial and Practical Kin Support in Sweden

Ulla Bjornberg, Hans Ekbrand•ARTICLE•Journal of Comparative Family…•2008•Cited by: 1

In Sweden de-familialization is since several decades an established policy in the sense that the state has acquired a significant responsibility for the welfare of individuals, independent of the family he/she belongs to. In debates concerning the relations between support from the welfare state and the family one recurring statement is that in taking over the family responsibility, the state has contributed to the weakening of support between f…
