Marital Status, Social Integration, and Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors in the Military Health and Well‐Being Project
Suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs) are a public health concern, particularly among Veterans, who experience elevated rates of STBs. Social integration is negatively associated with STBs, such that high social integration is correlated with low rates of STBs. Much of the literature has studied marital status as a social relationship that may protect individuals from STBs. Although largely unstudied, it has long been assumed that social integra…
Using crisis text messaging service data to measure the impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on mental health in Ireland
In 2020 and 2021, non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) were implemented globally to mitigate the transmission of COVID-19. This study is aimed to assess the impact of NPIs on the public mental health in Ireland by drawing on two datasets: (1) data of 43,433 chats initiated at Text About It, a free text-based mental health crisis service in Ireland, and (2) emotional well-being indicators reported by respondents of the Amárach public opinion su…
The Validity of Google Trends Search Volumes for Behavioral Forecasting of National Suicide Rates in Ireland
Annual suicide figures are critical in identifying trends and guiding research, yet challenges arising from significant lags in reporting can delay and complicate real-time interventions. In this paper, we utilized Google Trends search volumes for behavioral forecasting of national suicide rates in Ireland between 2004 and 2015. Official suicide rates are recorded by the Central Statistics Office in Ireland. While similar investigations using Goo…
Respiratory illness in British schoolchildren and atmospheric smoke and sulphur dioxide 1973-7. I
The relation between respiratory illness and atmospheric smoke and sulphur dioxide (SO2) was investigated from 1973 to 1977 in children aged 6 to 11 from a random sample of 28 areas in England and Scotland. Cross-sectional results are presented for 1975, and results from other years briefly summarised. In 1975 there were 19 areas with data on pollution and in these areas the sample included 5787 children of white ethnic origin of whom 4116 (71%) …
Respiratory illness in British schoolchildren and atmospheric smoke and sulphur dioxide 1973-7. II
A study was set up to investigate the effects of annual changes in the levels of atmospheric smoke and SO2 on changes in health from 1973 to 1977 in primary schoolchildren from 28 randomly selected areas of England and Scotland. Changes in health were measured by taking the change in number of respiratory conditions reported from one annual examination to the next. The number of areas with data on pollution in each period was 5,9,17, and 14 respe…
