A socio-political study of gendered proper names in Palestine
This article examines the gendered aspects of naming practices in Palestine. We study the personal names of the new generation in relation to name derivations and motivations in order to identify the emerging sociological aspects of naming practices in the West Bank of Palestine. We collected the names of the registered births over the last 10 years from local hospitals as well as the names of the parents, classified the names into separate categ…
Covid-19 and the decolonisation of education in Palestinian universities
Despite the severe social, health, political and economic impacts of the outbreak of Covid-19 on Palestinians, we contend that one positive aspect of this pandemic is that it has revealed the perils and shortcomings of the teacher-centered, traditional education which colonizes students' minds, compromises their analytical abilities and, paradoxically, places them in a system of oppression which audits their ideas, limits their freedoms, and curt…

Suppression of the Female Name in Contemporary Palestine
Palestinian female identity has been constructed and reconstructed as an amalgamation of patriarchal-oriented roles (daughter, wife, mother, sister, grandmother or even aunt), demonstrating women’s exclusion from the realm of men who have proper names to locate them within a family group. This article examines the suppression of the female name and the use of reference and terms of address as euphemisms for women in contemporary, non-urban Palest…
Companion Animals and Religion
Prompted by the scarcity of studies on the attitudes of people towards pet (companion) animals in most Arab countries and inspired by their previous research on the attitudes towards animals in Palestine and Norway, the researchers conducted this study to measure the attitudes of university students in Oman with reference to religious observance. A total of 217 students at Sultan Qaboos University in Oman responded to the Pet Attitude Scale ( PAS…
Attitudes Toward Animal Rights in Palestine
This study investigates and compares attitudes of 205 Palestinian and Norwegian university students toward companion animals (pets) using the Pet Attitude Scale. In order to provide some background for the Palestinian attitudes toward nonhuman animals, we discuss canonical Islamic texts on their treatment, as well as the present situation for animal protection in the Middle East. The findings from the survey suggest differences between Palestinia…
A Once in a Lifetime Experience”
The Practice Placement in Palestine Project is the result of collaborative efforts aimed at offering students from Lillehammer University College in Norway practical training in Palestinian refugee camps. The project brought the two cultures into close contact through which an exchange of ideas, cultural values, and educational and social experiences took place. This contact aids in offering students educational opportunities that qualify them in…
