Reach and recall of skin cancer prevention messages delivered by sporting event organizers among outdoor athletes
Outdoor athletes face elevated skin cancer (SC) risk from excessive ultraviolet exposure and poor sun protection practices. Event organizers represent an underutilized resource for SC prevention messaging. We sought to evaluate a multichannel SC prevention campaign (runner’s guides, runner’s bag, and social media) at nine sporting events, measuring channel recall and engagement. A cross-sectional study at trail running and cycling events (7,348 p…
Potential Energy as an Alternative for Assessing Lower Limb Peak Power in Children
The aim of this study was to analyze the use of potential energy (PE) as an alternative method to assess peak power of the lower limbs (PP) in children. 815 Spanish children (416 girls; 6-11 years old; Body Mass Index groups (n): underweight = 40, normal weight = 431, overweight = 216, obese = 128) were involved in this study. All participants performed a Countermovement Jump (CMJ) test. PP was calculated using Duncan (PP DUNCAN ), Gomez-Bruton (…
Sun Exposure during Water Sports
Excessive sun exposure is the main avoidable cause of skin cancer. Outdoor sports performed without adequate photoprotection are risky practices in this respect. This study examines whether elite athletes in water sports (specifically surfing, windsurfing, and sailing) take appropriate measures to protect their skin from the sun, and whether there are differences in this respect according to age, gender, or sports discipline. This study is based …
What Sun Protection Practices Should Be Adopted by Trainee Teachers to Reduce the Risk of Skin Cancer and Other Adverse Outcomes
Excessive sun exposure and insufficient protection are the main risk factors for the onset of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer (the most common types of cancer suffered by fair-skinned populations) and other adverse effects on the skin and eyes. Epidemiological data highlight the scant awareness of this risk among young people and the high rates of sunburn often recorded among this population. The main aim of the present study is to examine …
