God’s Chosen People or God’s Nation? Exploring Evangelical Roma Religious Experience through Bulgarian and Slovak Romani Studies
Ztracené bohémství v Bohémii
This study presents the innovative results of repeated ethnographic research and brings insight into the contemporary phenomena of lifestyle migration and backpacking. The studied issue is examined on the example of several groups of foreigners in Český Krumlov, Czechia in the period between approximately 1995 and 2015. These groups were located around several hostels. The main focus is placed on the life trajectories and lifestyle preferences of…
Faith and Overcoming Trauma in an Evangelical Romani Community
This article addresses the role of evangelicalism as a means of overcoming the trauma caused by natural disaster or disease. Using an ethnographic approach, it examines the connection between the beliefs of Roma in the Asparukhovo neigh-bourhood of the Bulgarian city of Varna and the hazards from which they suffered: the flood in June 2014 and Covid-19 during its first wave in 2020. People make sense of tragedy using different interpretations. It…
Evangelical transformations of empowerment and female Romani pastors

Using case material from my ethnographic research, I examine how Pentecostalism intersects with gender dynamics. In presenting the voices of pastors’ wives and female leaders, I reveal their areas of action and participation in for…

Starving Srebrenica and the Recipes for Survival in the Bosnian War (1992–1995)
This article discusses the topic of food scarcity, hunger, and survival strategies in the context of the 1992-1995 Bosnian War. I open up the question of the role of food in the armed conflict using prevailingly the example of Srebrenica (and partially Sarajevo) in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where I have undertaken long-term ethnographic fieldwork between 2013-2018. I argue that the people concentrated in the UN 'Safe Area' of Srebrenica were intent…
Evangelical Gypsies in Bulgaria
The Evangelical conversion of Gypsy groups worldwide has attracted the attention of ethnologists, anthropologists, ethnomusicologists, historians and sociologists. The problems discussed in the literature are connected with the influence of the 'new' religion on the way of life and identity of the converts. What are the changes that the believers undergo in their everyday lives? How do they celebrate holidays and festive occasions like weddings? …
