  • Modeling monolingual and bilingual children’s language attitudes towards variation in metropolitan France

Open Access•Anna Ghimenton, Christophe Coupé et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Language•2026

This study investigates four factors (age, sex, SES, and bilingualism) influencing children’s language attitude (LA) development. We examine LAs in monolingual (N = 46) and bilingual (N = 71) children (59–143 months) living in France using a matched guise experiment where the children evaluated normative and non-normative variants of five linguistic constructions in French. Using a mixed-effects model, we show that children’s preferences for norm…

  • What is ‘advanced statistical modelling’

    Open Access•Christophe Coupé•ARTICLE•Linguistic Typology•2025

Article What is ‘advanced statistical modelling’?: commentary on “Replication and methodological robustness in quantitative typology” by Becker and Guzmán Naranjo was published on July 25, 2025 in the journal Linguistic Typology (volume 0, issue 0)

  • The performance of L2 French children on the Litmus-QU Nonword repetition task during their first year of exposure

Open Access•Letícia Almeida, Christophe Coupé•ARTICLE•Bilingualism Language and Cognition•2025

In this study, we describe the performance of 62 newly immigrated children to France at a nonword repetition task (LITMUS-QU-NWR-FR) designed to evaluate bilingual children’s syllable structure. Children were between 6;0 and 9;1 and had diverse language backgrounds. They participated in our study during their first year of exposure to French. The majority of our children exhibited a good performance on the task. The variation observed is related …

  • Complexity in Language

Open Access•Salikoko S Mufwene, Christophe Coupé et al.•BOOK•Complexity in Language•2017

The question of complexity, as in what makes one language more 'complex' than another, is a long-established topic of debate amongst linguists. Recently, this issue has been complemented with the view that languages are complex adaptive systems, in which emergence and self-organization play major roles. However, few students of the phenomenon have gone beyond the basic assessment of the number of units and rules in a language (what has been chara…

  • Bridging phonological system and lexicon

  • Across-Language Perspective on Speech Information Rate

Open Access•François Pellegrino, Christophe Coupé et al.•ARTICLE•Language•2011•Citada por: 12

This article is a crosslinguistic investigation of the hypothesis that the average information rate conveyed during speech communication results from a trade-off between average information density and speech rate. The study, based on seven languages, shows a negative correlation between density and rate, indicating the existence of several encoding strategies. However, these strategies do not necessarily lead to a constant information rate. Thes…

Open Access•Egidio Marsico, Ian Maddieson et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Annual Meeting…•2004
