  • Is the recently enhanced mesoscale convective systems in East Asia due to global warming or decadal variability

Open Access•Zhongxi Lin, Bao Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2026

Since the beginning of 21st century, mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) precipitation in the Yangtze River Basin (YRB) has increased by approximately 25% per decade. Given the concurrent global warming, it is crucial to distinguish the relative roles of anthropogenic warming and decadal variability in driving this change. With a pair of high-resolution experiments in pseudo global warming approach, we found that the increasing trend of MCS preci…

  • Amplified urban heat island effect in southern china’s old towns following atmospheric regulation policies

Open Access•Junxiao Zou, Hans W Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Cities and Society•2025

  • Possible effects of tropical cyclone activities over eastern North Pacific on Arctic sea ice

Open Access•Liangying Zeng, Yao Ha et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2025

The rapid loss of Arctic sea ice has sparked considerable interest in understanding the factors that influence its variability. This study investigates the teleconnection between tropical cyclone (TC) activities in the eastern North Pacific (ENP) and sea ice concentration (SIC) over the Arctic. Observational analysis reveals that ENP TC activities during summer contribute to decelerating the loss of the Arctic sea ice in September. Mechanisticall…

  • Concurrent hot extremes and high ultraviolet radiation in summer over the Yangtze Plain and their possible impact on surface ozone

Open Access•Yan Xia, Yongyun Hu et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2022

Hot extremes, ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and surface ozone all have prominent effects on human health and ecosystems. Here we show evidence that both hot extremes and high surface UV radiation at noon time occur concurrently in summer over the Yangtze Plain. Composite analysis suggests that hot extremes in summer are primarily caused by the westward extension of the Western Pacific Subtropical High, which leads to less clouds and consequently mo…

  • Long-Term Variations in Global Solar Radiation and Its Interaction with Atmospheric Substances at Qomolangma

Open Access•J M Bai, Xuemei Zong et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

An empirical model to estimate global solar radiation was developed at Qomolangma Station using observed solar radiation and meteorological parameters. The predicted hourly global solar radiation agrees well with observations at the ground in 2008-2011. This model was used to calculate global solar radiation at the ground and its loss in the atmosphere due to absorbing and scattering substances in 2007-2020. A sensitivity analysis shows that the …

  • Stratospheric ozone loss-induced cloud effects lead to less surface ultraviolet radiation over the Siberian Arctic in spring

Open Access•Yan Xia, Yongyun Hu et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

Surface ultraviolet (UV) radiation has important effects on human health, terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and air pollution. Both stratospheric ozone and clouds are key factors that influence surface UV radiation. Here we find that Arctic ozone loss may lead to a decrease in surface UV radiation over the Siberian Arctic in spring using ERA5 reanalysis. It is found that Arctic ozone loss is associated with an increase in high clouds by modifyi…
