Statistical Patterns in the Organization of Scythian Weapon Decor
One aim of modern archaeology is to reconstruct the worldview of past societies. For nonliterate ones such as the Scythians, this can be approached by studying the decor of a single category of artifacts as an integrated system. The article’s methodology draws on ideas advanced by archaeological theorists, especially Jean-Claude Gardin and Yu. L. Shchapova, who treated decoration as a subsystem in the morphological description of objects, underst…

Norway's Neutrality in Winter War between Soviet Union and Finland as Reflected in “Arbeiderbladet”
This study examines how events of the Soviet-Finnish conflict were portrayed by Norwegian media with a focus on evaluating Norway’s claims to neutrality during the Winter War (November 30, 1939—March 12, 1940). The analysis is based on seventy-four articles from “Arbeiderbladet,” the official organ of the Norwegian Labour Party, published throughout 1940. It demonstrates that Norwegian press coverage aimed at constructing a negative image of the …

The novelty of this article raises the problem of transmitting technical information in antiquity as being posed for the first time, despite the abundance of works on the history of craftsmanship in foreign and Russian archeology. Methods and materials. The multidisciplinary…

I. E. Zabelin’s Research in Materials Science (based on archival materials)
The article introduces new historical sources into scientific circulation — manuscripts of preparatory materials for articles by the outstanding Russian archaeologist I. E. Zabelin (1825—1908) “On metal production in Russia before the end of the 17th century” and “Historical Review of the vitreous enamel and tile work in Russia”, as well as Zabelin’s unpublished review of I. Материалы из архива И. Е. Забелина по истории Калмыцкого ханства
Introduction. The paper actually attempts a source study. Goals. The work aims at introducing into scientific circulation some materials on the eighteenth-century history of the Kalmyk Khanate collected by the outstanding Russian historian and archaeologist Ivan E. Zabelin (1820–1908). The documents articulate additional data on how the Russian imperial government bestowed the title of khan to Donduk-Dashi, and that of namestnik (Russ. ‘viceroy’)…
Characteristics of Scythian Weapon Ornamentation as a Reflection of Peaceful Contacts between Cultures (possibility of using database technology)
Currently, new trends in social sciences have emerged, such as eirenology, paxilology and "anthropology of war". The role of weapons in rituals associated with peace negotiations is a significant part of semiotic weapon status. The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics of Scythian weapon ornamentation that can be described as a system of symbols. By analyzing a proprietary database of Scythian weapon ornamentation dating back t…
“I Share Admiration of My People for Glorious Feats of Soviet Armed Forces”
Revealing the specific portrayal of information about the Battle of Stalingrad in the English press during the Great Patriotic War, this article analyzes publications in the newspaper ‘British Ally,’ which was published in Great Britain in the Russian language for Russian readers. The question arises about the necessity of applying a new direction in global science — imagology — for such research. The novelty of this study lies in being the first…
Parametric Analysis of V.O. Klyuchevsky’s Work “Terminology of Russian History”
Introduction. Terminological work, both in the world and in Russian science, was carried out, first of all, on the material of exact and technical disciplines. Arrangement of terminology of humanitarian knowledge has been in the focus of attention of researchers only in recent years. Thus, the aim of the work is to study the terminological system of historical knowledge by means of parametric analysis of the little-known course by V.O. Klyuchevsk…
The “Prince” of Steppe Scythia (Children’s Burial from Tovsta Mohyla in the Context of Mythological Picture of the Scythian World)
The purpose of the article is to reconstruct the child’s place in the social universe of the Scythians. The basis for the study was a child burial from the Tovsta Mohyla mound as one of the few not robbed burials of steppe Scythia of the 4 th century BC. Meanwhile, the burial is regarded as a text (in the semiotic sense). The method developed by the author for reconstructing the semantics of images on the costume elements of the buried led to the…
On the Semantics of the Decorations of the Ilyichevo Quiver (On the Question of the Ancient Zoomorphic Classifications)
This paper aims at the reconstruction of the Scythians’ ideas of the classification of animals which embodied the structure of the mythological Universe. The research is based on the analysis of the decoration of the Ilyichevo quiver as a unique artefact featuring the scene of torturing by predators of three biological genera: a bird, an animal, and a reptile. The study of the sources supplying information on the ancient Iranians’ zoological clas…
