  • The Neurofunctional Basis of Pattern Practice

    John T Lamendella•ARTICLE•TESOL Quarterly•1979•Cited by: 3

An explanation is proposed for the substantial failure of pattern-practice drills to equip most second language learners with the ability to automatically access Target Language grammatical knowledge in communicative interactions. The hypothesized explanation is based on the neurofunctional approach described in Lamendella (1977) and Selinker and Lamendella (1978). Relevant theoretical results of clinicopathological investigations in neurolinguis…

  • The Role of Extrinsic Feedback in Interlanguage Fossilization

    Open Access•Larry Selinker, John T Lamendella•ARTICLE•Language Learning•1979•Cited by: 2•References: 4

This paper, a discussion of the model presented in Vigil and Otler (1976), relates to one parameter of "fossilization" in inter-language (IL) learning: the role of "extrinsic feedback." The notion of "extrinsic factors" in second language acquisition is defined, and permanent fossilization is carefully distinguished from temporary stabilization of IL forms and systems. Six tentative conclusions about the role of extrinsic feedback in IL fossiliza…

  • General Principles of Neurofunctional Organization and Their Manifestation in Primary and Nonprimary Language Acquisition1

    Open Access•John T Lamendella•ARTICLE•Language Learning•1977•Cited by: 12•References: 29

In this paper an attempt is made to characterize and contrast aspects of the functional organization of neuropsychological systems carrying out primary language acquisition and two distinct types of nonprimary language acquisition: secondary language acquisition, and foreign language learning. It is noted that foreign language learning is quite different from primary language acquisition, but that between secondary language acquisition and primar…

  • Subjective Estimates of Consonant Phoneme Frequencies

    Open Access•John B Carroll, John T Lamendella•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1974•References: 7

Subjective magnitude estimates of the frequencies of 24 consonant phonemes were obtained from 65 university students, some with training in linguistics, by a method that had been used by Attneave (1953) for judgments of letter frequencies. Reliabilities of averaged judgments for comparably sized groups of 30 judges were estimated as in the neighbourhood of .95. Averages of logarithmically transformed judgments were correlated with log frequencies…

  • On the Irrelevance of Transformational Grammar to Second Language Pedagogy

    Open Access•John T Lamendella•ARTICLE•Language Learning•1969•Cited by: 5•References: 5

Many scholars view transformational grammar as an attempt to represent the structure of linguistic knowledge in the mind and seek to apply transformational descriptions of languages to the development of second language teaching materials. It will be claimed in this paper that it is a mistake to look to transformational grammar or any other theory of linguistic description to provide the theoretical basis for either second language pedagogy or a …
