Exploring Viewer Perceptions of Videos Depicting Cat-Dissented “Play” and Their Potential to Contribute to Harmful Interactions
Human–cat play interactions may provide valuable opportunities for increasing cat welfare and strengthening the human–cat bond. However, these benefits only apply if both parties are assenting to the interaction; otherwise, the play risks causing stress and potential injury to either party. Online videos of human–cat dyads tagged as “play” often include visible cat discomfort, raising questions about how uploaders and viewers perceive cat dissent…
Feeling, Judging, and Connecting
Humans and domestic cats have a unique relationship that has changed progressively over 10,000 years. This dyad’s play behavior is especially interesting due to its potential role in fostering interspecies communication and bonding. However, human-cat play and guardians’ perceptions of its benefits and detriments may not be well understood. This study used a global online survey which included answers to open-text questions. Responses were analyz…
A Scoping Review of the Risks Posed by Companion Animals to Older Adults
Research has reported on positive aspects of pet guardianship to reduce physical and mental health issues in older adults (over the age of 65 years). There is, however, a need to be cognizant of the risks that pertain to companion animal guardianship. The aim of this scoping review was to systematically identify literature regarding the risks that companion animal guardianship may pose to older adults to facilitate greater understanding and inclu…
Investigating Factors Associated With Stress in Guardians of Dogs Under 12 Months of Age
Highlighting gaps in puppy research using Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological theory of human development
The use of an ecological model in puppy development research can help to capture the real-world complexity of development factors and outcomes. Using a modified version of Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological model, we explored the real-world experiences of 20 Australian adults who had acquired and were subsequently raising a puppy in their home for companionship purposes. Our participants’ experiences offered insights into several gaps in the current …
Australian veterans’ experience of pet ownership
Australian military veterans, like many veteran populations globally, experience mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, and suicide, at rates higher than the general population. The impact of having a non-formally trained companion animal on veteran mental health is largely unknown, with literature focusing on trained assistance animals to look at specific illnesses. The aims of the current study were to assess …
The Good, the Bad, the Helpful
Dogs living in Western countries today are more likely to be considered a member of the family compared with those in previous generations. This shift in human–dog dynamics also affects how dogs are raised, the benefits perceived, and the challenges faced by guardians. To provide appropriate support to modern dog guardians, canine professionals need to understand their experience. This study aimed to better understand the lived experience of guar…

Dreaming correlates of alexithymia among sleep-disordered patients
Increasing evidence supports the clinical view that alexithymia is associated with disturbed dreaming. However, a consistent, replicable pattern of relationships between alexithymia and different dreaming components has not yet been identified. Groups of sleep-disordered outpatients (N 580; 46.0 13.2 years) and nonclinical controls (N 145; 22.9 4.2 years) were administered the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) and a 14-item Dreaming Questionnair…

Disturbed dreaming, posttraumatic stress disorder, and affect distress
Nightmares are common, occurring weekly in 4%-10% of the population, and are associated with female gender, younger age, increased stress, psychopathology, and dispositional traits. Nightmare pathogenesis remains unexplained, as do differences between nontraumatic and posttraumatic nightmares (for those with or without posttraumatic stress disorder) and relations with waking functioning. No models adequately explain nightmares nor have they been …
The dimensional nature of disturbed dreaming
The authors’ proposed model of nightmare formation withstands several criticisms raised in an accompanying commentary article (D. S. Weiss, 2007). A principal criticism, that the model lacks convergent and divergent validity, appears to stem from the commenter’s application of a strong categorical, as opposed to the authors’ use of a dimensional, approach to the model/construct of nightmares. Furthermore, ongoing research continues to support the…

Increased Mastery Elements Associated With Imagery Rehearsal Treatment for Nightmares in Sexual Assault Survivors With PTSD
Exposure, abreaction, and mastery have been proposed as the therapeutic processes of nightmare (NM) reduction. Imagery rehearsal therapy (IRT) effectively reduces NMs but involves minimal exposure and abreaction. The authors investigated the use of mastery in the scripting of new dreams (NDs) elaborated during IRT. NM an dN D reports were collected from 44 female sexual assault survivors with chronic NMs during their initial application of IRT. M…
The Typical Dreams of Canadian University Students
To investigate the dimensional structure of dreams, the Typical Dreams Questionnaire (TDQ) was administered to 1181 first-year University students in three Canadian cities. A profile of themes was found that varied little by age, gender or region; however, differences that were identified could be interpreted as due to developmental milestones, personality attributes or sociocultural factors. Factor analysis produced a solution consisting of 16 c…
Emotions in dream and waking event reports
Twenty participants hand-wrote reports of their dreams and waking life events and used an extensive lexicon of emotion words and types to rate the emotions experienced in each scene of each report. From these ratings, the incidence and intensity of 22 different emotion types in the two kinds of report were assessed. The incidence of emotion categories specified by a cognitive model of emotions was also assessed. Emotions were found to be present …
Changes in the kinesthetic content of dreams following somatosensory stimulation of leg muscles during REM sleep
The notion that dreaming is isolated from sensory activity is chal/~ng~d by demonstrations that somatosensory stimuli are frequently incorporated illlo dreiUlI colllent. To further study such effects, four volunteers were administered pressure stimulation to either the left or the right leg during REM sleep and awakened to report tlu:ir dreams. These dreams were rated and compared to non-stimulated drcams. Stimulated dreams more frequently contai…

Individual differences in orienting activity mediate feeling realization in dreams
Effects of somatosensory stimulation on dream content in gymnasts and control participants
Somatosensory stimulation of the leg muscles in REM sleep appears to perturb virtual orientation in dream experiences. According to our model of vestibulomotor adaptation (Sauvageau, Nielsen, & Montplaisir, 1996), the dreaming mind attempts to compensate for such destabilizing stimulation by increasing eye movement activity or by modifying dream content, among other possible reactions. Effective compensation may be more easily achieved by partici…

Describing and modeling hypnagogic imagery using a systematic self-observation procedure
The published literature suggests that systematic self-observation may be a suitable method for clarifying the nature and correlates of hypnagogic imagery and thus a useful adjunct to psychophysiological and cognitive studies of sleep onset. The potential applicability of one recently proposed self-observation procedure (Nielsen, 1992) to such studies is demonstrated in the present work. The procedure permits numerous hypnagogic images to be coll…

Publication patterns in dream research
The annual rate of journal publications is a pertinent index of a scientific field's prosperity. In the present study, annual publication rates were calculated for the field of dream research using both medical (Index Medicus, MEDLINE) and psychological (PsychINFO) reference databases. A composite profile from the medical database spanning 111 years revealed very similar changes in publishing levels following the release of Freud's (1958/1900) Th…

Topographical EEG mapping in a case of recurrent sleep terrors
Sleep terrors are characterized by marked CNS arousal and typically occur during stage 3-4 sleep within the first NREM cycle. Studies of the EEG during sleep terrors suggest that delta power and synchrony in the EEG may be important physiological markers of sleep terror presence and intensity. An EEG mapping study was undertaken with a single participant who experienced three sleep terror episodes in the laboratory. A one-minute section of EEG wa…
