  • Sharing Power: Leadership Lessons from Interdisciplinary Practices in an Art Museum

    Open Access•Francesca Casadio•ARTICLE•Curator The Museum Journal•2021

Fine arts museums are undergoing a radical transformation, from closed containers of “things” to porous spaces onsite and online where the visitor experience is paramount. The current moment is accelerating this transformative evolution of museums into institutions that feel relevant and attractive to diverse audiences, now increasingly on multiple platforms. This change on the visitor‐facing side needs to mirror a change in practices and attitud…

  • Casting Light on 20th-Century Parisian Artistic Bronze: Insights from Compositional Studies of Sculptures Using Hand-Held X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy

Open Access•Émeline Pouyet, Monica Ganio et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2019

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Paris was home to scores of bronze foundries making it the primary European center for the production of artistic bronzes, or bronzes d’art. These foundries were competitive, employing different casting methods—either lost-wax or sand casting—as well as closely guarded alloy and patina recipes. Recent studies have demonstrated that accurate measurements of the metal composition of these casts can provide art …

  • A Roman Egyptian Painting Workshop: Technical Investigation of the Portraits from Tebtunis, Egypt

Open Access•Johanna Salvant, Jane Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2018•Cited by: 6•References: 36

Roman‐period mummy portraits are considered to be ancient antecedents of modern portraiture. However, the techniques and materials used in their manufacture are not thoroughly understood. Analytical study of the pigments as well as the binding materials helps to address questions on what aspects of the painting practices originate from Pharaonic and/or Graeco‐Roman traditions, and can aid in determining the provenance of the raw materials from po…

  • László Moholy-Nagy’s Painting Materials: From Substance to Light

Johanna Salvant, Julie Barten et al.•ARTICLE•Leonardo•2017

This article presents results from an extensive scientific examination of the painting materials used by László Moholy-Nagy. The artist employed modern materials, such as metals and plastics, alongside more traditional artists’ oil paint and canvas, creatively manipulating these diverse media to generate a unique visual vocabulary. This study highlights the intimate link between the material properties and the expressive content of Moholy-Nagy’s …

  • An Ancient Chinese Bronze Fragment Re‐examined After 50 Years: Contributions From Modern and Traditional Techniques

    Open Access•Marcus L Young, Francesca Casadio et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2010•Cited by: 3•References: 30

Modern analytical techniques, such as secondary ion mass spectrometry, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, in‐situ synchrotron X‐ray diffraction and Raman microscopy, alongside scanning electron microscopy with energy‐dispersive X‐ray analysis and powder X‐ray diffraction, were used to investigate bronze fragments from an ancient Chinese bronze vessel (also known as a hu ) in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. • Evaluation of Binder/Aggregate Ratios in Archaeological Lime Mortars With Carbonate Aggregate: A Comparative Assessment of Chemical, Mechanical and Microscopic Approaches

Open Access•Francesca Casadio, Giacomo Chiari et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2005•Cited by: 10•References: 9

This paper reports on the comparative evaluation of traditional and innovative methods for the investigation of mortar technology. Preliminary results of various approaches to determining the mix proportions in lime mortars with carbonate aggregate are presented. Quantitative analysis was tested on ad hoc prepared mortars of known composition containing carbonate aggregates of different origin (travertine and Bath limestone). Wet chemical methods…
