Perceived stress, negative life events, and adiposity among Puerto Rican young adults in the South Bronx, New York, and San Juan, Puerto Rico
Perceived stress and negative life events may impact adiposity, but findings across populations are inconsistent, with limited research among Hispanic/Latino groups. We examined these relationships among 818 Puerto Rican young adults (441 in San Juan, PR, and 377 in the South Bronx, NY) from the Boricua Youth Study Health Assessment (2015-2020). Perceived stress (Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10)) and negative life events (List of Threatening Exper…
Parental psychopathology and posttraumatic stress in Puerto Ricans
BACKGROUND: Parental psychopathology is associated with their children's posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). However, the mechanisms through which this occurs remain unclear. We hypothesized that exposure to childhood adversities is the mechanism linking parental psychopathology to child PTSS and that parenting practices moderated these associations. METHODS: Participants (N = 1,402) with an average age of 24.03 years old (SD = 2.20), were all …

Does Context and Adversity Shape Sexual Behavior in Youth? Findings from Two Representative Samples of Puerto Rican Youth
Development, religious affiliation, and social context
The percentage of PR TAY who endorse no affiliation is higher than the general PR population, reflective of increasing religious non-affiliation among TAY across cultures. Critically, TAY with no religious affiliation are twice as likely as Catholics to have illicit SUD, and 1.5 times as likely as Non-Catholic Christians to have any SUD. Endorsing no affiliation is more adverse for illicit SUD in PR than the SBx, underscoring the importance of so…
How Ethnic Minority Context Alters the Risk for Developing Mental Health Disorders and Psychological Distress for Latinx Young Adults
Preventing depression and anxiety disorders in Latinx young adults may require targeting different childhood factors depending on whether they reside within the ethnic majority or minority context. People in the ethnic minority context may benefit more from policies aimed at reducing discrimination and improving economic opportunity, while people in the majority context may benefit more from opportunities for strengthening family and peer relatio…
ADHD and risk for subsequent adverse childhood experiences
BACKGROUND: Children with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are more likely to develop Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The reverse relationship - ADHD predicting subsequent ACEs - is vastly understudied, although it may be of great relevance to underserved populations highly exposed to ACEs. METHODS: Participants were 5- to 15-year-olds (48% females) with (9.9%) and without ADHD (DSM-IV criteria except age of onset) in a longi…
Parental incarceration during childhood and later delinquent outcomes among Puerto Rican adolescents and young adults in two contexts
OBJECTIVE: Childhood parental incarceration has been linked to increased rates of delinquency and arrest during adolescence and young adulthood; however, previous research has focused on White and/or Black samples rather than Latinx youth. We examined relationships between childhood parental incarceration and later delinquency and arrest among Puerto Rican youth living in Puerto Rico (majority context) and the mainland United States (minority con…
Developmental Trends in Sexual Attraction Among Puerto Rican Early Adolescents in Two Contexts
Sexual attraction (SA), the earliest stage of sexual orientation, is scarcely studied. This prospective study examined, over 3 years, prevalence, changes in SA, and the role of context, among 946 Puerto Rican youth, aged 11–13 years at initial assessment in the South Bronx (SBx), New York City, and Puerto Rico (PR). Overall, 98.1% of boys and 95.3% of girls reported opposite-sex only SA at some point, whereas 13.8% of girls and 12.0% of boys repo…
Childhood Adversity and Pubertal Development Among Puerto Rican Boys and Girls
OBJECTIVE: Evidence stemming largely from retrospective studies suggests that childhood adversity (CA) is associated with earlier age at menarche, a marker of pubertal timing, among girls. Little is known about associations with pubertal tempo among boys or racial/ethnic minorities. We examined the association between CA and timing and tempo of pubertal development among boys and girls. METHODS: The Boricua Youth Study is a longitudinal study of …

Neighborhood factors, drinking behavior, and alcohol use disorder in San Juan, Puerto Rico
Residing in neighborhoods characterized by objective measures of disadvantage has been associated with poorer health outcomes, above and beyond individual characteristics. This study tests a partial mediational model by which the association between neighborhood disadvantage (census-level poverty, undereducation, and unemployment), and the volume of weekly alcohol consumption, binge drinking, and alcohol use disorder (AUD) among Puerto Ricans in …
Children exposed to alcohol-related problems and DSM-5 alcohol use disorder in San Juan, Puerto Rico
This article estimates the proportion of children (17 and younger) exposed to an adult with an alcohol problem or alcohol use disorder (AUD) in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Data are from a household random sample of 1,510 individuals 18-64 years of age. A total of 20.9% of children in sample households were exposed to an adult with an alcohol problem, and 5.7% were exposed to an adult with DSM-5 AUD. These considerable proportions suggest that alcohol …

The nature and relevance of risk and protective factors for violence among Hispanic children and adolescents
The role of peers in the relation between hurricane exposure and ataques de nervios among Puerto Rican adolescents
Although a relation between disaster exposure and ataques de nervios ( ataques ) has been established in adult samples, little is known about this among youth, including factors that may moderate this relation. This study examined the role of the peer context in the relation between exposure to Hurricane Georges and experiencing a past year and lifetime ataques among a representative community sample of 905 youth (N = 476 boys and 429 girls; ages…
Effectiveness of the Engagement and Counseling for Latinos (Ecla) Intervention in Low-income Latinos
BACKGROUND: Persistent disparities in access and quality of mental health care for Latinos indicate a need for evidence-based, culturally adapted, and outside-the-clinic-walls treatments. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate treatment effectiveness of telephone (ECLA-T) or face-to-face (ECLA-F) delivery of a 6-8 session cognitive behavioral therapy and care management intervention for low-income Latinos, as compared to usual care for depression. DESIGN: Multisite…

School and Community Influences on the Long Term Postdisaster Recovery of Children and Youth Following Hurricane Georges
Disasters affect the school and community microsystems in which children and youth recover. This study explored characteristics of the school (school violence, teachers’ attitudes) and community microsystem (neighborhood climate, neighborhood monitoring, community violence) that may affect the disaster exposure and internalizing psychopathology relationship in children and youth aged 12–27 months after Hurricane Georges hit Puerto Rico. A represe…
