  • Adaptation of WHO’s generic tuberculosis patient cost instrument for a longitudinal study in Africa

Open Access•Denise Evans, Craig van Rensburg et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2021

The WHO developed a generic ‘TB patient cost survey’ tool and a standardized approach to assess the direct and indirect costs of TB incurred by patients and their households, estimate the proportion of patients experiencing catastrophic costs, and measure the impact of interventions to reduce patient costs. While the generic tool is a facility-based cross-sectional survey, this standardized approach needs to be adapted for longitudinal studies. A…

  • Prevalence and Risk Factors of Infection in the Representative Covid-19 Cohort Munich

Open Access•Michael Pritsch, Katja Radon et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Given the large number of mild or asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 cases, only population-based studies can provide reliable estimates of the magnitude of the pandemic. We therefore aimed to assess the sero-prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 in the Munich general population after the first wave of the pandemic. For this purpose, we drew a representative sample of 2994 private households and invited household members 14 years and older to complete questionnaires and…

  • The Nobel laureate Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman FRS and his contacts with the British scientific community in a social and political context

    Open Access•Rajinder Singh, F Rieß•ARTICLE•Notes and Records the Royal…•2004

The Indian Nobel laureate Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman FRS (18887–1970) interacted closely with the British scientific community. He was elected a Fellow of The Royal Society in 1924, was knighted by the Colonial Government in 1929 and was awarded the Hughes Medal by The Royal Society in 1930. With the help of unpublished letters and newspaper clips, we show the influence of Raman's British physics professor on his life. Next we discuss how R…

  • The 1930 Nobel Prize for Physics

    Open Access•Rajinder Singh, F Rieß•ARTICLE•Notes and Records the Royal…•2001

Raman scattering (in Russia called combination scattering) was discovered in 1928 by Indian and Russian scientists, at almost the same time. In 1930, the Nobel Prize for Physics was awarded to the Indian scientist Sir C.V. Raman, F.R.S., while the Russian scientists G.S. Landsberg and L.I. Mandelstam were rejected. The reasons for this are illustrated by analysing the nomination letters for the three scientists, as well as the report of the Nobel…
