  • Tryptophan deficiency and alcohol consumption in rats as a model for disadvantaged human populations: A preliminary study

    Choice of diet is a combination of socioeconomic, psychological, and biological factors. This article reports on a preliminary study using an animal model and approximating the dietary conditions found on some Native American reservations. The results suggest that alcohol consumption in these disadvantaged populations may be a result of tryptophan deficiency. Tryptophan-deficient rats consumed more alcohol under ad-libitum conditions, perhaps to …
