There is a good deal of interest today in cultural psychology and its central forms of thought, which are interpretive or meaning making rather than computational or algorithmic. At the same time, there is a good deal of concern that such a focus is incompatible with the praxis of empirical or scientific psychology. The research described in this article is an attempt to exemplify one way that a scientific study of interpretive processes might pr…

  • The Colored Blocks Test

    Open Access•Carol Fleisher Feldman, Addison Stone•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•1978•Cited by: 2•References: 4

A recently developed test of basic Piagetian stage abilities is described, and new data collected in rural Hawaii and in a working-class Chicago suburb are used to defend its validity. The test makes use of familiar test stimuli-blocks of different colors and shapes-which are reasonably salient cross-culturally. The use of (1) identical materials in assessment of all levels of cognitive development and (2) minimal verbal cues of simple constructi…

  • The Interaction of Sentence Characteristics and Mode of Presentation in Recall

    Open Access•Carol Fleisher Feldman•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1971•Cited by: 4•References: 1

The present study was designed to demonstrate that the recall of sentences in a conventional experiment is different from recall in even the most minimally conversational conditions when sentences include certain structures characteristic of ordinary speech. Sentences were constructed which included modal verbs, and the words "even" and "only" (called here underdetermined elements), alone and in combination with negation and question transformati…

  • The Role of Underdeterminacy and Reference in the Sentence Recall of Young Children

    Open Access•Carol Fleisher Feldman•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1971•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Children of five and eight years of age were asked to repeat sentences. The sentences were (1) underdetermined sentences containing modal verbs, (2) referential sentences in which the subject referred to an object presented simultaneously with the sentence, and (3) control sentences containing neither. Sentences were presented in a conversation condition approximating an ordinary conversation and on a tape recording. In eight-year-olds, but not f…

  • A Developmental Analysis of the " Psychological " Subject and Predicate of the Sentence

    Open Access•Peter A Hornby, Wilbur A Hass et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1970•Cited by: 2•References: 5

The purpose of this investigation was to study the early development of the distinction between the "psychological" subject and predicate and to determine its relationship to the grammatical subject and predicate distinction. In the first task, kindergarten and 2nd grade subjects were asked to select the most important word in each of several sentences. In the second task, two more groups of children at the same age levels were asked to produce o…
