  • Culture, Temperament, and the “Difficult Child”

Charles M Super, Giovanna Axia et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2008

This study explores parental ethnotheories of children's temperament through mothers' responses to McDevitt and Carey's Behavioral Style Questionnaire (1978) for 299 children aged 3 to 8 years and interviews with their parents, in Australia, Italy, t

  • A developmental study of the acquisition of Russian colour terms

    Open Access•Ian R L Davies, Ian Davies et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Language•1998

We report a study of the acquisition of colour terms by Russian children which had two main aims: first, to test Berlin & Kay's (1969) theory of colour universals using acquisition order as a measure of basicness; and secondly, to see if the two blue terms of Russian are genuinely basic. Two hundred children aged from three to six-years-old were tested on three colour-tasks – colour term listing, colour term production and colour term comprehensi…

  • A developmental study of the acquisition of colour terms in Setswana

Open Access•Ioan Davies, Ian Davies et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Language•1994

We report a study of the acquisition of colour terms by speakers of Setswana, the language of Botswana in Southern Africa. This was carried out as a test of Berlin & Kay's theory of colour term universals, on a language with less than the maximum complement of eleven basic colour terms, and in order to document changes in Setswana under the impact of economic development. Seventy-seven five- to nine-year-olds were studied on two colour tasks: eli…

  • Children's conversation with adults

    Open Access•Harry Mcgurk, Martin Glachan•ARTICLE•Children & Society•1988

nderstanding inter‐personal communication is no easy task and seems particularly uncertain when adults are talking to children. The authors set out to identify how children perceive what adults say to them by seeking to understand the nature of children's knowledge about adults in general. A study of 300 children, aged 4–14 was carried out to ascertain the types of response children gave at different ages to a standard set of questions in convers…

  • Pictorial Depth Perception by Children in Scotland and Ghana

    Open Access•Harry Mcgurk, Gustav Jahoda•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•1975•Cited by: 3•References: 11

An experimental study of the development of pictorial depth perception, conducted in Scotland and Ghana, is reported. Subjects constructed three-dimensional models representing the size and spatial relationships between figures in pictorial scenes in which three depth cues-elevation, texture gradient, and linear perspective-were manipulated. For both samples size accuracy increased with the amount of depth information available; it also increased…

  • The Development of Pictorial Depth Perception

Open Access•Harry Mcgurk, Gustav Jahoda•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1974•Cited by: 2

This is a follow-up of a previous study (Jahoda & McGurk, 1974), in which pictorial depth cues were systematically manipulated. In Expt. I children aged between 4 and 10 were presented with stimulus pictures in which depth cues were reduced to elevation and walking or standing posture of two figures. In one condition a training picture reminding subjects of the actual size relations remained visible, in order to test for possible memory effects, …

  • Pictorial Depth Perception

Open Access•Gustav Jahoda, Harry Mcgurk•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1974•Cited by: 4

Children between 4 and 10 years participated in a study of their ability to discriminate pictorially represented depth. Stimuli comprised pictures in which depth cues were systematically manipulated. Subjects were required to construct three-dimensional models representing the size and spatial relationships between figures in the pictures. Models were scored for size and spatial accuracy. Size accuracy, relatively high at 4 years, increased with …
