Impact of treatment attendance on mental health outcomes within task-shared psychological treatments: A causal analysis from the PRIME India study
Task-shared psychological treatments play a critical role in addressing the global mental health treatment gap, yet their integration into routine care requires further study. This study evaluated the causal association between an implementation factor of a task-shared psychological treatment and participant outcomes to strengthen the implementation-to-outcome link within global mental health. This secondary analysis utilized cohort data from the…
Social support and user engagement with task-shared psychological treatments in the real world: Findings from the PRIME India study
Task sharing in psychological treatments has been recognized as an effective strategy for bridging the global mental health treatment gap. However, more research is needed to better support its implementation in routine care. Mental health services users' engagement with treatment is a crucial implementation factor, yet empirical evidence on its determinants remains sparse. The current study aims to investigate social support as a predictor of us…
Psychosocial Peer Support to Address Mental Health and Burnout of Health Care Workers Affected by Covid-19: A Qualitative Evaluation
Health care workers in the U.S. are experiencing alarming rates of burnout. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has worsened this issue. Psychosocial peer-support programs that address general distress and are tailored to health care systems are needed. A Care for Caregivers (CFC) Program was developed at an American metropolitan university hospital and outpatient health care system. The CFC program trains "Peer Caregivers" and managers and has fo…
No Safe Spaces: The Retraumatization and Dehumanization of Immigrant Survivors of Domestic Violence in the United States
Immigrants in the United States suffer high rates of domestic violence (DV). Using data from six focus groups with 38 DV service providers, we examined how immigrant survivors navigate an often-hostile political climate and identified structural barriers to healing and help-seeking. Findings indicated that structural discrimination, social exclusion, and dehumanization compound existing trauma and negatively impact survivors’ well-being. Results …
Exclusionary School Discipline Policies and Mental Health in a National Sample of Adolescents without Histories of Suspension or Expulsion
We apply the theory of collateral consequences and a social stress process framework to school discipline to examine whether exclusionary school discipline policies are associated with the mental health and wellbeing of adolescents who have never been suspended or expelled and whether this association varies across race/ethnicity. Data are from 8,878 adolescents in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. Hierarchical linear…

Determinants of emergency department utilization for non‐traumatic dental conditions in Massachusetts
Increased access to preventive dental services may lower likelihood of ED use for NTDCs. Interventions that target younger adults, Medicaid enrollees, and the uninsured, may be the most efficient way to lower NTDC ED use

Testimonial Psychotherapy in Immigrant Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence: A Case Series
Testimonial psychotherapy is a therapeutic ritual for facilitating the recovery of survivors of human rights violations that focuses on sharing the trauma narrative. Originally developed in Chile as a method for collecting evidence during legal proceedings, testimonial therapy has been widely applied transculturally as a unique treatment modality for populations that are not amenable to traditional Western psychotherapy. In this case report, we f…
The Double Stigma of Limited Literacy and Mental Illness: Examining Barriers to Recovery and Participation among Public Mental Health Service Users
The disadvantaged social position of public mental health service users reflects synergistic relationships among tangible disadvantage and stigma and its consequences. Limited literacy, an important factor in social disadvantage and an additional source of stigma, is virtually absent from the discussion. Employing a mixed-methods, service user–informed design, we explore the meaning and impact of limited literacy in the lives of public mental hea…

Applying Nepali Ethnopsychology to Psychotherapy for the Treatment of Mental Illness and Prevention of Suicide Among Bhutanese Refugees
Addressing mental health needs of 100,000 ethnic Nepali Bhutanese refugees relocated from Nepal is a new challenge for mental health clinicians in the receiving countries. A limitation of current services is the lack of knowledge about cultural understandings of mental health. Ethnopsychology is the study of emotions, suffering, the self, and social relationships from a cultural perspective. Nepali ethnopsychology can be used to develop and adapt…

A Time-Insensitive Predictive Instrument for Acute Hospital Mortality Due to Congestive Heart Failure: Development, Testing, and Use for Comparing Hospitals
The purpose of this study was to develop a "time-insensitive" predictive instrument (TIPI) for acute hospital mortality due to congestive heart failure. In Phase 1, based on prospectively collected data on 401 congestive heart failure patients among 5,773 study patients who presented to six New England hospitals over a 2-year period whose chief complaints were chest pain, shortness of breath, or other cardiac symptoms, a multivariable logistic re…

A Time-Insensitive Predictive Instrument for Acute Myocardial Infarction Mortality: A Multicenter Study
This study develops a "time-insensitive" predictive instrument for acute myocardial infarction mortality that would be useful both as a real-time clinical decision aid in the emergency medical setting and also for retrospective assessment and comparison of medical care based on risk-adjusted mortality predictions. This was done using prospectively-collected data on 5,773 patients with chief complaints of chest pain or other symptoms suggesting ac…

This study developed and tested a tool to assess the likelihood of patients having acute cardiac ischemia and thus the appropriateness of admitting them to the coronary care unit (CCU). It is valid both for real-time clinical use and for retrospective review: a time-insensitive predictive instrument (TIPI). The authors' earlier acute ischemia predictive instrument, not designed specifically to support retrospective use, could not offer the advant…
The Official Secrets Act 1989
By its long title this Act of Parliament replaces section 2 of the Official Secrets Act 1911 by provisions protecting more limited classes of official information. Let us remember that there are two strands to the larger story. One strand concerns government secrets and MI5 and section 2 of the Official Secrets Act 1911. The other strand concerns espionage and MI6 and section 1 of that Act. The two strands intertwine, happily or unhappily, when a…
