The Road Not Taken
As the ideological pillar of modern Japan’s imperial system, the Imperial Rescript on Education was profoundly imprinted on Japan’s modern education. But, in fact, multiple alternative proposals for developing modern education were put forth in the mid-Meiji period. One such proposal was the ethics (rinri) education promoted by the then Minister of Education Mori Arinori, whose conception of moral education was best embodied in the two textbooks …
Inhibition Effect of Ionic Liquid [Hmim]Cl on Microcystis Growth and Toxin Production
Ionic liquids (ILs) are known as "green solvents" and widely used in industrial applications. However, little research has been conducted on cyanobacteria. This study was conducted to investigate the toxicity of ionic liquids ([Hmim]Cl) on Microcystis aeruginosa PCC7806. The EC 50 (72 h) of [Hmim]Cl on the growth of Microcystis aeruginosa PCC 7806 was 10.624 ± 0.221 mg L -1 . The possible mechanism of toxicity of [Hmim]Cl against M. aeruginosa PC…
In search of a moral standard
In the mid-Meiji period, the leading scholar Katō Hiroyuki proposed relying on religion in moral education as he was dissatisfied with the Ministry of Education’s inclination towards Western ethics in their reform. Triggered by Katō’s proposal, there arose an intense debate over the ‘standard’ for moral education in the educational circles. The Ministry of Education failed to present a debate-ending ‘standard’, while the promulgation of the Imper…
