The corsair, the bishop, the governor and the runaways
Through the story of a corsair excommunicated by the bishop of Santa Marta after four blacks fled from his ship claiming free status, I show how the practice of corso in the eighteenth century revolved around, and contributed to the sustenance of an illegal and necessary local economy, with slaves a sought-after commodity. I then document the competing sites of power and authority –secular and religious- in this Spanish colony, especially regardi…
Craig Jeffrey, Timepass
This book is the interesting product of fieldwork revisited with a fresh perspective. Less than ten years after his first doctoral study of Jat farmers’ economic practices and agricultural and business strategies in Uttar Pradesh (Jeffrey 1999), Craig Jeffrey returned to the same area to investigate how the families of this locally dominant caste, as well as members of other, less privileged groups had fared in light of the profound economic and …

To fairly tell
This article focuses on social agents’ own understandings of socio‐economic mobility and social achievement, exploring the possibilities offered by the tool of family life history in the context of formerly Untouchable communities in western India, Maharashtra. While arguing in favour of family life histories as both resource and method in the Indian context, I reconsider the positivist functionalist stance dominant in studies of social mobility …

Anthropologists and the Study of Formal Education
This article takes as its departing point the quantitative approach to knowledge and education prevalent in current studies of human development. Articulating a concern for human development together with explorations of formal schooling and nationalism, the article begins with an overview of the place occupied in anthropology by the study of formal education, illuminating why and how this domain of enquiry has become crucial for anthropologists …
The Pedagogical State
Schooling Passions
Schooling Passions explores an important, yet often overlooked dimension of nationalism—its embodied and emotional components. It does so by focusing on another oft-neglected area, that of elementary education in the modern state. Through an ethnographic study of schools in western India, Véronique Benei examines the idioms through which teachers, students, and parents make meaning of their political world. She articulates how urban middle- and l…
Globalization’ and regional(ist) cinema in Western India
Much has been written on the relations between cinema and nationalism, and the former's crucial role in shaping people's imaginations of the nation. In comparison, the ways in which regional and national cinemas may interact, compete, or conflict with one another have been little documented. This article seeks to fill a gap in studies of media, regionalism, and nationalism by exploring a suggestive example of the making of a locally‐based regiona…

East is East and West is West, and the Twain shall never meet..., But there is neither East nor West, Border, nor Breed, nor Birth, When two strong men stand face to face, tho’ they come from the ends of earth. » Rudyard Kipling, The Ballad of East and West (1892).
Reappropriating Colonial Documents in Kolhapur (Maharashtra)
The district histories should not become [. . .] a series of unrelated facts without any narrative which can be linked with national history, [. . .] the facts that raised problems should invariably come in the gazetteers if they are to be taken as faithful registers of the country. (Chaudhuri, History of the Gazetteers of India , 1964: 163) After India became free, it was felt that a new edition of the Gazetteers should be brought out. The life …
